You can expect to be exposed to many other parts of our codebase and to learn about and participate in its development while growing your own skills and supporting the growth of other engineers in your crew. We've been providing advertising, design and PR for almost 40 years and for the past 20 of those, content managed websites and bespoke web applications exclusively in Python and the Django framework.

We're looking for somebody friendly, quick witted and experienced to join our small team of Python developers in building and launching websites and applications for the likes of the NHS, Home Office, Taylor Wimpey, Hasbean Coffee and countless charities, universities, and police forces.

We're based in Leicester, UK in a lovely, shiny office where we normally enjoy working, collaborating and socialising together. Given we're in the midst of a global pandemic we're all working from home, and this particular position is open to anybody and everybody - fully remote, fully onsite, or somewhere in between.

OUR TECH STACK

We deploy websites and applications using Python and Django, and the Wagtail CMS for content managed websites. Other technologies and frameworks you'd experience include Docker, Bootstrap, PostgreSQL, MariaDB/MySQL, Elasticsearch, SCSS, HTML5, and JavaScript. We host a large number of websites and applications with Rackspace and Amazon Web Services.

THE ROLE

Your key responsibilities will be the ongoing development and refinement of numerous websites for our eclectic list of clients. You'll be helping to improve existing projects and working on brand new projects too.

Day to day you'll be working alongside a small team of developers (junior and senior), designers, and a user researcher who will all be there to support you and discuss and develop your ideas. You'll also have access to 60+ other talented writers, designers and creatives across the company.

We use both agile and waterfall development methodologies depending on the client and project.

Requirements

We need somebody that truly knows their way around Python and Django, and the Wagtail CMS too. Two or more years experience minimum feels right - if it's slightly less but you're mindblowingly good then we're all ears!

Programming skills are definitely only half the story, you'll also need to be able to:

Think independently and be able to solve unique challenges efficiently and autonomously (although we're realistic and don't expect you to have memorised the Python docs - you'll get more kudos from searching Stack Overflow) Also be able to work cooperatively as part of a team Possess good writing and communication skills Be comfortable talking about and explaining technical concepts in plain English Keep up to date with new techniques in your field and share knowledge and new ideas with the team It's not critical, but it would be beneficial if you also had experience in:

Developing or maintaining WordPress websites DevOps and deployment techniques React or Node.js Front-end development (HTML, SCSS) Cybersecurity Benefits

There is a real buzz, excitement and family feel about the place. All 60+ of us are passionate about what we do. We're all remote at the moment, but when we're in the office people work in their slippers, share pictures of their pets and kids, and frequently organise good old fashioned drinks in the nearby pub. Above all - remote or not - after a fulfilling day’s work, people head home with a smile on their face. Looking after each other is the thing we're really proud of :)

But, this is a job ad, and we get how it needs to work. Other benefits include:

Competitive salary based on your experience Complete flexibility to work remotely 20 days annual leave and 8 days national bank holidays plus extra time around Christmas Early finishes on Fridays throughout the summer A big good old messy Christmas party and a mid-year summer party for you and your family or a friend (all expenses paid) Whatever computer, software, books and other materials you might need A healthy budget for whatever training, conferences, and other qualifications you might be interested in taking Free-as-in-free beer, wine, and other goodies as we near the weekend Regular paid for social activities (in person normally, but remote at the moment): cookalongs, yoga lessons, go-karting, curries, poker, and more Free flowing, high quality, award-winning Hasbean coffee on tap A gorgeous workspace with plenty of space to relax, think, read, cook, eat, and work

If this all sounds good to you, please get in touch!

We are recruiting for a switched on front end JS developer with a fine eye for detail/QA. The ideal candidate will have UI skills and is comfortable working with rich web application development using Vue.js, seeking to grow into a full stack developer role over the next 18 months.

Required Skills

We are building complex software solutions for the auction industry using Node.js and Vue.js within Laravel and you will need to have experience in the following areas if you are going to succeed in this role. We have a great team that will help and mentor you through learning our architecture, and you will be involved in both the upgrade of our legacy auction platforms and the creation of our new marketplace products.

JavaScript advanced knowledge. You will have a deep knowledge of JavaScript in terms of frameworks and libraries for designing and implementing front-end architecture and analysing dependencies among user interactions. You should know how to use various JavaScript frameworks and libraries in a single project while avoiding compatibility conflicts.

Programming paradigms. You will know other programming paradigms such as MVC, OOP, and functional programming, which support programming concepts that help create reusable and readable front-end code.

Single-page applications (SPAs). You will have experience of Vue.js to enable user actions to trigger re-rendering (redrawing) processes on other UI elements without reloading the whole page.

You will also be comfortable working with hybrid environments and know which approach is appropriate for the specific project and how to implement it.

Networking protocols. You will understand the REST architectural style and standard networking protocols designed for web application environments.

Our projects require high interaction between the back-end and front-end to deliver a real time auction bidding experience via Node.js and dynamic media streams—you will need to be comfortable working with more advanced protocols such as web sockets.

Security. You should be familiar with web security concepts and how to integrate user authentication and authorisation into our application’s front-end, specifically as we have to adhere to anti-money laundering protocols,

You should be familiar with the HTTPS protocol, know how to avoid cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, and have experience implementing user session management and token-based authentication and authorization.

Package managers. Our web applications contain a lot of JavaScript dependencies, you will be experienced working with package managers to manage our JavaScript library dependencies and avoid version collisions.

JavaScript bundlers and task runners. You willknow how to use these tools to develop SPAs effectively. You will be able to configure the automation of repetitive tasks in front-end development without additional tools. You will know how to deliver test-driven development and behaviour-driven development to ensure our applications are front-end testable.

Advanced optimization. Complex front-end architectures can contain a lot of source code with redundant dependencies, a situation which requires additional optimisation, you will be comfortable working to drive optimum code efficiency with proper documentation for the wider development teams.

You will also know how to implement the lazy-loading technique, where content is downloaded invisibly as a user browses or scrolls web pages.

Back-end development. You will work closely with our back-end developers in order to design API calls which define communication between an application’s front-end and back-end.

You may be called upon to start building front-end architecture without any support or data from an application’s back-end. In this case, you will need to know how to design and develop your own API calls to mock (fake) the data that will later be provided from the back-end.

Person profile

You will be an approachable problem solver, a team player who enjoys the challenge of figuring out commercially led solutions for our client operations. You understand the importance of communication when there are roadblocks, and you have a very keen eye for detail, driving code efficiency and documenting your work to help the entire team up their skillsets.

You will be happy working in an agile scrum based environment, remotely using a number of tools to support workflow.

In return, you'll get to work on one of the most exciting projects in the auction space, with a fast growing and ambitious company that is beginning to expand internationally. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to grow with us as we move into our next round of product launches.

This isn't a senior role so we don't expect you to know everything already. But we are looking for somebody who is strong on the fundamentals of our development day-to-day. For this position that means:

  • You have a track record of getting things done and should be ready to show us some work you're proud of at interview.
  • You feel at home in PHP 7+ and have experience of applying object-oriented principles to solve problems in an extensible and maintainable way.
  • This is a full stack position so you can complement your back end skills with a good knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript and are happy taking a UI from design to code.
  • Composer is an essential tool for us in controlling both internal and external dependencies. You should be comfortable with it and willing to learn about its subtle mysteries.
  • Working with git (and GitHub) is natural, if not instinctual, to you by now.
  • You're enthusiastic and love learning about new web technologies and when to use them (and when not to).
  • You want to work with others, learn from them, teach them new things, and succeed as a team.
  • Talking to clients is something you are comfortable with or happy to learn. We don't have a project management layer so good communication skills are vital.

There is obviously a lot of other technology we use here and hopefully you'd like to learn about some of it. Even better, you might already be up to speed in some areas:

  • MariaDB, or MySQL, or another SQL flavour. We think carefully about queries and designing sensible database schema.
  • Unit testing is something we always encourage but we understand this can be hard to get experience with in some environments. If you've done it, automated it and embedded it into your workflow, you'll fit right in.
  • Our front end stack varies but you will encounter jQuery, CSS preprocessors (we like SASS) and front-end build tools (we like Gulp.js) in your workflow.
  • We are webperf nuts. We hope you are too but if not, expect to learn about how to measure and improve site speed.
  • Our wider stack includes ElasticSearch, NGINX, Redis, AMQP. If these aren't yet old friends, be ready to learn about their powers and idiosyncrasies.
  • We work a lot in eCommerce. It would be great if you have too and can show us some examples of where you've handled the scary end of actually taking people's money.
  • Integrating with APIs is bread and butter for us. Tell us about payment gateways, booking engines, ERPs or anything else you've worked with.
  • Lastly, a whole load of the above happens in Amazon Web Services. If you know your CloudFront from your CloudWatch that'll give you a bit of a head start.

Software Engineer

Here at Appointedd, we’re on a mission to be recognised as the best online booking system in the world by enabling anything, or anyone, to be booked (or requested) in as little as two taps! We’d love to hear from engineers who would be interested in helping us achieve our goals! 🌎

Who are we?

Appointedd was born in 2011 when our founder and CEO, Leah, then a busy magazine editor, found herself unable to book an appointment with her hairdressers (and who hasn’t been there?) She saw a gap in the market for an easy online booking system. From that idea, Appointedd has grown into an industry-leading product, powering everything from small hairdressers to multi-national household names, and supported by a team of 18+ ambitious, talented people in a lovely Edinburgh office overlooking the iconic Castle.

Our engineers come from a diverse variety of backgrounds, with several without a Computer Science background; one of the team has a degree in Biological Sciences, and another a degree in Chemistry with a background in teaching. As long as you have a passion for building great software, we’re happy to have you. 🙌

What do we use?

  • Node.js and modern Javascript (ES6+) to power our back-end application code.
  • MongoDB for most of our persistent data storage.
  • AWS for all of our infrastructure. Our older services are hosted on Elastic Beanstalk with our newer services moving towards a serverless architecture using API Gateways and Lambdas.
  • Classic AngularJS for our front-end application code.
  • PHP 7.1 for our legacy back-end application code.
  • Git for our version control.
  • GitHub for our source code hosting and pull request management.
  • Prettier, ESLint, and EditorConfig for automatic code styling and quality control.
  • Codeship for our continuous integration/deployment pipeline.
  • Clubhouse for our issue tracking and project management.
  • Slack for our communications.
  • We have no enforced code editor so you’re welcome to use whatever you feel the most productive in. We have a range of editor users in the team with VSCode, Vim, and Emacs being the main examples.

What will you be doing?

As part of the product team you’ll be responsible for turning concepts and designs for features into reality! 🚀

This is an exciting time to join us as we’re in the growth stage of our journey! You’ll get the opportunity to help us scale our engineering processes, contribute to transitioning our legacy monolith into modern services, and develop brand new functionality.

We’re a fast-paced and growing startup, so you’re likely to be doing a variety of tasks as part of your sprints. From doing feature work to stomping bugs, it’s unlikely any two days at Appointedd will be the same! Since we’re a small (but growing) engineering team, you’ll have the opportunity to work on both the front-end and back-end of our product as well as be involved with our infrastructure.

Why should you apply?

  • You’re interested in building the world’s best online booking system! ✨
  • You like being given full ownership of your workload whilst being backed by a supportive team.
  • You enjoy learning about existing and new technologies, and how to effectively use them.
  • You care about writing high quality and well-tested code.
  • You care deeply about user experience and satisfaction.
  • You want to be empowered to explore and experiment in a supportive environment.
  • You’re interested in being a part of a company that values personal and professional development. Your manager will have a technical background that can support you through regular one-to-ones and mentorship.
  • You want to hang out with a cool team, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and snacks provided, every Friday for our weekly show and tell. (Who can say no to that!?) 🍻
  • You want a free roll for breakfast every Friday. 🤤

This all sounds great! How do I apply? If all of the above has given you the urge to fire an application over to us, great! Please send us your CV and a covering letter to jobs@appointedd.com, making sure you explain a bit about why you want to work with us and what you think you can bring to the team.

If your CV is accepted, our interview process normally consists of the following steps:

💻 A small, take home, no time-limit Javascript programming challenge.

📞 A 15-20 minute phone interview.

🏢 A pair of on-site interviews that should last around 2-3 hours in total.

If you’d like to learn more about how our product works you can sign up for a free trial here!

Unfortunately we’re not currently accepting remote applicants so we’ll only be considering those who are currently based within commuting distance of Edinburgh or are willing to relocate.

No recruitment agencies please.

We have an amazing office in central Edinburgh (one of the great cities of the world), and our work environment is light and bright with inspiring spaces and quiet places.
