Do you do your own dishes? We've got a job for you (and it's not dishwashing ;-) ).

Do you put them in the sink and expect someone else to do them? Move on, please.

Do you get pissed (in a professional way) when someone else leaves their dishes in the sink? Please apply!

TrainerRoad is looking to expand our engineering group. We're looking for smart software engineers who "get things done." We’re interested in remote candidates in the USA or candidates interested in working in our Reno office.

Areas of work include React, TypeScript, Electron and React Native.

App Development We're moving our apps from cross-platform Xamarin to Electron/React Native. You'd be involved in this process and would work with experienced engineers to rebuild a section of the app.

Our goal is to increase the speed of app development. We do this through hot module reloading, fast computers, a great build chain, automated testing, clear and well-defined issues and a dedicated QA team that tests every PR.

We track what our users do, learn from that and improve the product. We want this loop to be a quick as possible.

Our website is built in Angular 2+ and there's the opportunity to work on the web in Angular.

This job is primarily for Electron (using React) and React Native app development, but there's room for someone to move to the web in the future or split their time between web/app.

Engineering Principles we believe in

  • Write good code, but not necessarily great code.
  • Good code ships, great code gets "tinkered" with and debated about ad nauseam.
  • Good code is understandable.
  • We admit it, we've made things too complex in the past. We've had complex class hierarchies and really shown off our CS skills.
  • Sure, there's fewer lines of code, but it takes someone a few days to figure out what's going on and it's easy to write bugs.

We believe in a few more lines of code for the sake of clarity and debugging ease.

  • Good code is testable, and we're pragmatic about testing.
  • You don't get the same testing ROI for every line of code. We believe to test the areas that are most likely to break, are tricky or are likely to be changed. We still run thousands of unit tests per build, but we're not testing 1+1 = 2.
  • Quick builds will set you free!
  • To be a successful engineer, you need to get into "flow" (more on that below) as often as you can. That's why we love hot module reloading.
  • We want just enough process to be awesome, and nothing more.
  • We have engineers review issues before a sprint for clarity and completeness. When they submit a PR there's always code review, UI/Unit tests run, then QA manually tests.
  • For the web, we automatically push every PR that's merged into Master.

For the app, we do weekly releases where there's a final regression test with all merged PRs from the previous week.

Our process prevents bugs/regressions and ultimately saves a lot of time.

  • Long-running branches are the devil
  • Often times projects will take weeks/months before they are launched.
  • Instead of experiencing a merge/testing hell at the end of the project we encourage small PRs into master with a "feature flag" on the new project that allows employees to use the feature in production but not our users.

Cool Things we Do

  • Every PR has a set of unit tests and automated UI tests run against it.
  • Every PR is code reviewed.
  • We have a dedicated QA team to manually check your PR (it requires four testers to sign off).
  • Every web PR that is approved is automatically deployed (CI).
  • We've got a beta system that has a flow of production data that helps you develop and test your code without worry of breaking things.
  • Everything is hosted on Azure. There's plenty of dev/beta/test servers and databases to use.
  • The web and app team have their own Product Managers.
  • We run two-week sprints. The web/app team reviews, estimates, and discusses all sprint issues before they are free to be worked.
  • We often pair program.
  • The majority of our engineers are remote.
  • We have a skilled design team that handles the HTML/LESS for app and website.

Who We're Looking For

We want smart engineers who get shit done! Not only do you have to be smart, but you also have to be pragmatic.

Let's say you need to paint a room white.

Smart and Pragmatic Engineer: A pragmatic engineer fills up a sprayer (rather than use a paintbrush), gets to work, and makes sure they don't paint themselves into a corner.

Smart Engineer (but not pragmatic): A smart engineer who's not pragmatic might design a system to change the color of the room in just 30 seconds. Sure, it would take 2 months to build the system but we could change colors so quickly! It's totally optimized for repainting!

If the second example sounds like you, please do not apply. We know it's fun to go hog wild in projects but we need to "get shit done". There's a whole line of other engineers and designers waiting for that room to get painted so they can do their own work on it.

We're a Team, not a Family It sounds harsh to say, but we're not a Family. I know lots of businesses call themselves a family, but I think it's BS. If you get drunk at work and yell at someone, we're going to let you go (although we would give Grandma a pass at Thanksgiving).

It's better to think of TrainerRoad like a sports team. Everyone has their role and their jobs. It's our jobs as managers to bring new hires up to speed, train them in our system, and coach them to be successful.

If someone is not performing, we need to talk to them, coach them, find out what's going wrong and where we can improve. If someone just can't perform to the standard level of the team and we can't coach them to get better, we have to let that person go.

Another clear sign that you have a high-performance team is that if everyone would "enthusiastically rehire" each other for their current roles. It really makes work wonderful when you respect, trust and value your co-workers.

Required Technology Experience

  • React
  • Redux/Mobx
  • Typescript
  • Git
  • Web Application Experience (interactive web pages)

Optional Technology Experience

  • React Native
  • Electron
  • Native iOS/Android
  • Angular
  • C# (We use this on our web backend)

Work Remote or in Reno, Nevada We're looking for the best candidate we can find in the US. Three-quarters of our development team work remotely. It works very well with the help of Slack and Github.

We expect remote employees to overlap at least 6 hours with the Reno, Nevada office (we're there 8am-5pm Pacific time).

Salary We're looking to hire an engineer for $110k/year. If you ask for more, we'll reject your application. If you're interested in the company please subscribe to our RSS feed at jobs.trainerroad.com for when a higher level job posting is open.

Perks Unlimited Vacation 401k with 4% company matching 99% of employee's individual health care paid (I know 99% is weird...it's an ACA thing, and it ends up being just a few dollars per paycheck) You can see a preview of what you'd pay here: https://www.zenefits.com/benefits-preview/?token=3733c1ac-fc72-420a-b224-d9a25bcc1e27 Flexible schedule Access to the latest fitness devices (power meters, trainers, sensors, etc.) Your Resume should have: Links to any open source projects you've contributed to (not required) Github/StackOverflow username if you'd like Examples of experience in the "Optional Technology Experience" area Your Cover Letter should have: Let us know why you want to work for TrainerRoad We also Require The best engineers only want to work with other great engineers. We've found that the best way to find great engineers is to have them code, not just answer trivia questions during an interview.

That's why we require applications to do a refactoring exercise as part of their job submission. The right candidate won't find this a pain in the ass; it should be enjoyable.

This also weeds out the vast majority of candidates who just fire off resumes everywhere.

You can find the refactoring exercise here: https://github.com/trainerroad/RefactoringChallenge

It has a README.md with instructions.

Excited about our Company? In your application let us know why you want to work with us and why you think you'd be a good fit for our company.

FAQs

Do I have to be a cyclist to apply? Nope! Not everyone in the company is a cyclist. It helps if you're an active racer but it's not required. If you are a racer or TrainerRoad user, let us know!

What's unlimited vacation mean? The CEO of TrainerRoad used to be an engineer at a Fortune 500 company where life was a grind. We believe employees put out their best work when they are happy and not burnt out.

If your brain just isn't working at 3 pm, we encourage employees to go home and rest up. It does no one any good to sit and stare at the computer screen for another two hours. We don't track that time.

Employees generally shoot for around four weeks of REAL vacation time (no slack checking) but some take more, and some take less. The thing we care about is how productive you can be and how much value you can add to the company. Bottom line, we want people who are passionate and get things done. If you meet those requirements, everything else works itself out.

That being said, if you end up taking massive amounts of vacation, come in late, leave early and aren't producing outstanding work we're going to have a problem.

How do you work? We're big believers in Deep Work and Flow. If you're not turning off Slack (snooze), going DND on your phone and shutting off the world for multiple hours a day you're probably not being as productive as you could be. The idea is a developer should be able to work on a chunk of work that they understand distraction-free for multiple hours totally. This is the only way the company moves forward.

We try to work as pragmatically as we can. We have excellent designers on staff who go from mockups to responsive HTML with light javascript work.

Development uses Github with a strict pull request process. We test, comment, refactor and improve each other's pull requests.

We have a QA team (we call them the Test Team) that checks every PR and does full regression checks for each App release, and we're continually getting more automated.

We have an Automation Team that only focuses on writing UI tests to speed up testing and find bugs faster.

We can one-click deploy our app on Alpha, Beta, and Production channels.

We can one-click deploy our website to Azure (includes smoke tests and warm up).

We have nightly builds that deploy to Test Flight and Google Play.

We often pair program via Slack.

We work off bi-weekly sprint issue lists on Github.

Developers get the super fast machines and awesome equipment. If it's going to let you be more productive, we want to spend the money on it.

You didn't ask about education, what's required? Please put your education on your resume, but we're not going to reject someone because they don't have a degree in Computer Science. We understand that some of the best and most passionate engineers are self-taught.

How long until I hear a response from you guys? What's the process? If you don't follow directions in this job posting, you'll be immediately rejected.

If you did follow directions, our goal is to review your refactoring within a week of submitting your application. All refactoring reviews are done "blind"; meaning the reviewer doesn't know your name, resume or where you're from. Code is code, and it should be reviewed that way without bias.

If we like your refactoring, we'll have you do a coding logic quiz. Nothing super in-depth CS wise. We've found that the candidates who do the best on these exercises are very successful at TrainerRoad.

We'll take the top combined refactoring and coding quiz results and set you up for a team interview.

If the team likes you; we'll then set up a pair programming session with you and an engineer. We'll give you a tour of our codebase and work on a real issue. This gives you a chance to run away from our codebase screaming and also demonstrate that you can communicate with us.

If all of the above is good, you're hired!

I know this sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through, but it works so so well! Once you're onboard, you'll love that everyone else went through the same process and is up to "your level" in terms of "get-shit-doneness".

What's with the dishes analogy? Doing your own dishes is a GREAT analogy for our culture. Don't leave shit around for someone else to clean up. Do your own dishes. Do you see someone making a mess? Let's discuss it (in a productive manner) so that we can nip that behavior in the bud.

We know we're really doing well when someone points out a manager not "doing their dishes" or causing an extra headache for a process that doesn't add value (it happens). Seriously, we need employees to call managers out on this. I'm the CEO writing this; please oh please tell me if I'm messing up or not walking the talk.

Want more detail about the benefits? You can see a preview of TrainerRoad's health benefits here:https://secure.zenefits.com/benefitsPreview?token=3733c1ac-fc72-420a-b224-d9a25bcc1e27

This is the longest job posting ever, when does it end?

Right now! Congrats if you made it this far! We look forward to looking at your resume and refactoring exercise.

TrainerRoad is an equal opportunity employer.

We offer:

  • Remote work,
  • Salary based on experience
  • Flexible environment If you are looking for a rewarding employment in a company that puts its employees first, we would like to work with you.

We are recruiting for a switched on front end JS developer with a fine eye for detail/QA. The ideal candidate will have UI skills and is comfortable working with rich web application development using Vue.js, seeking to grow into a full stack developer role over the next 18 months.

Required Skills

We are building complex software solutions for the auction industry using Node.js and Vue.js within Laravel and you will need to have experience in the following areas if you are going to succeed in this role. We have a great team that will help and mentor you through learning our architecture, and you will be involved in both the upgrade of our legacy auction platforms and the creation of our new marketplace products.

JavaScript advanced knowledge. You will have a deep knowledge of JavaScript in terms of frameworks and libraries for designing and implementing front-end architecture and analysing dependencies among user interactions. You should know how to use various JavaScript frameworks and libraries in a single project while avoiding compatibility conflicts.

Programming paradigms. You will know other programming paradigms such as MVC, OOP, and functional programming, which support programming concepts that help create reusable and readable front-end code.

Single-page applications (SPAs). You will have experience of Vue.js to enable user actions to trigger re-rendering (redrawing) processes on other UI elements without reloading the whole page.

You will also be comfortable working with hybrid environments and know which approach is appropriate for the specific project and how to implement it.

Networking protocols. You will understand the REST architectural style and standard networking protocols designed for web application environments.

Our projects require high interaction between the back-end and front-end to deliver a real time auction bidding experience via Node.js and dynamic media streams—you will need to be comfortable working with more advanced protocols such as web sockets.

Security. You should be familiar with web security concepts and how to integrate user authentication and authorisation into our application’s front-end, specifically as we have to adhere to anti-money laundering protocols,

You should be familiar with the HTTPS protocol, know how to avoid cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, and have experience implementing user session management and token-based authentication and authorization.

Package managers. Our web applications contain a lot of JavaScript dependencies, you will be experienced working with package managers to manage our JavaScript library dependencies and avoid version collisions.

JavaScript bundlers and task runners. You willknow how to use these tools to develop SPAs effectively. You will be able to configure the automation of repetitive tasks in front-end development without additional tools. You will know how to deliver test-driven development and behaviour-driven development to ensure our applications are front-end testable.

Advanced optimization. Complex front-end architectures can contain a lot of source code with redundant dependencies, a situation which requires additional optimisation, you will be comfortable working to drive optimum code efficiency with proper documentation for the wider development teams.

You will also know how to implement the lazy-loading technique, where content is downloaded invisibly as a user browses or scrolls web pages.

Back-end development. You will work closely with our back-end developers in order to design API calls which define communication between an application’s front-end and back-end.

You may be called upon to start building front-end architecture without any support or data from an application’s back-end. In this case, you will need to know how to design and develop your own API calls to mock (fake) the data that will later be provided from the back-end.

Person profile

You will be an approachable problem solver, a team player who enjoys the challenge of figuring out commercially led solutions for our client operations. You understand the importance of communication when there are roadblocks, and you have a very keen eye for detail, driving code efficiency and documenting your work to help the entire team up their skillsets.

You will be happy working in an agile scrum based environment, remotely using a number of tools to support workflow.

In return, you'll get to work on one of the most exciting projects in the auction space, with a fast growing and ambitious company that is beginning to expand internationally. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to grow with us as we move into our next round of product launches.

Platform.sh is a groundbreaking hosting and development tool for web applications. We’re a European VC-Backed scaleup with a host of blue-chip Enterprise clients and a string of awards and grants. To reinforce our technical prowess, we are looking to grow our engineering team. If you’re looking for an exciting, high-growth opportunity with an award-winning, cutting-edge company, this could be just the job for you.

We run dozens of cloud regions all over the world with a mix of clients from individual developers running small development clusters, to the biggest companies on earth that run some of their critical apps on us.

The company is fully distributed and remote first, with a strong accent on diversity and inclusion in all of its dimensions (gender, sexual orientation, race, country of origin - you have it, we want it). You won’t find any ableism of ageism either.

For its groundbreaking PaaS solution, https://platform.sh is looking for a Pythonian Cloud Engineer with a taste for Go, good Linux system understanding, and a real hunger for the challenges of building robust, distributed systems.

Platform.sh is a PaaS shrouded in a lot of black magic (we can consistently clone a whole running cluster, with its state, databases, indexes in a matter of seconds). We want to get this down to the hundreds of milliseconds domain. Interested?

There is more...

  • Our external API is pure Hypermedia REST + oAuth on top of Pyramid. It mechanizes the Git layer and needs more features.
  • We can consistently generate from the same manifest a Docker container, an LXC one, or VM disk images (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OpenStack).
  • We probably have the highest container density in the industry. We need to get it higher.
  • We have been working hard on a fast, resilient, and cost-optimized observability framework in order to know how the system behaves, now we want to better predict how it will behave.
  • We support any Python, Ruby, NodeJS, PHP, Java, and .NET, Elixir, of course, Elixir, time to roll-out Rust, somebody needs to push that button.
  • We need to have more auto-healing on the high-availability clusters. We need more performance out of our multi-protocol ssh proxy. We need work on our Ceph Implementation; we have strictly cool things to do on the Edge. We need… great ideas on how to make Platform.sh even better. Interested? Join us!

This is a remote position and very occasional travel to cool places like Paris, France, may be required.

 Skills & requirements:

Required:

  • Be a really really good dev that likes testing, understands how an OS works, knows networking, how git works, and the constraints of a distributed system.
  • Be proficient in Python or in Go (expertise in either or both, highly appreciated). But if you are a sufficiently fast learner and got a couple of other languages under your belt (such as Lua, Rust, Erlang, Ruby, or C …), we might bite.

Would be really great if you had:

  • Experience with C / C++ (we contribute to a bunch of upstream projects, like LXC) is a plus; love of C or C++ not required
  • Great knowledge of Git
  • Good Networking background (routing/protocols)
  • Good grasp of practical security and cryptography
  • Experience with other programming languages (e.g. Rust, Haskell, Java, Javascript, Ruby, Common Lisp, PHP)
  • Good knowledge of how the Web works (hacking Nginx with Lua a plus). You may want to brush up on HTTP before the interview
  • Good understanding of how database systems and search engines work
  • A good notion on distributed systems (consensus protocols like Raft/Paxos, eventual consistency models, gossip protocols)
  • Mad Debian Skills. Sporting a Debian plaid cloth during the interview is not frowned upon

To be clear so you are not surprised in the technical interview, this job is very much more for a systems engineer, rather than an application developer. So knowing about system calls is important, while knowing Django, not so much.

A bit about seniority, diplomas, and experience:

We don’t care, at all, about diplomas, you have a Ph.D. in computer science? That is lovely! We love science. You are a self-taught hacker whose main deployment target for years was Arduino? You could very well be a match.

We have senior juniors and junior seniors. Everybody is. Some of us have been coding for multiple decades. Some of us are fresh out of school. We expect you to have some very strong points. But we know everybody has continents of ignorance; that’s fine. As long as you love learning; you will be surrounded by people who love to share what they have learned.

Specifically, there is a catch-22 for “seniority requirements” for underrepresented candidates. Try us. We will go the extra mile (more probably a kilometer btw). We will take into account any valuable candidate with less experience in DevOps and System roles if needs be.

A bit about the interview process:

  • It is usually quite short. Two or three remote interviews. There will be no whiteboarding. Few if any algorithmic questions (unless you love those we would not like to frustrate the preppers).
  • The people interviewing you are going to be people you may end up working with. The interviews are going to be a bit “all over the place” with a bunch of detailed questions. The point is less to get the right answer than to give a glimpse of your “technical intellectual world”. You do not remember by heart the flags on a TCP packet? Well, neither do we, but it is a good conversation starter.

Hi there! First and foremost, I hope you're well in the face of coronavirus. That said, let's make this personal. My name is Xavier Armand and I am the co-founder of The Vaan Group (www.vaangroup.com): a fully remote UX design and engineering agency with headquarters in NYC. We’re looking to hire a backend engineer to work on e-commerce projects. We're specifically looking for someone with PHP and Laravel background and experience. Big plus if you've got experience with applications using Laravel + GraphQL

We believe awesome technology powers the best brands. So we build it. Our technology becomes the foundation upon which businesses scale their operations, escalate their marketing efforts and grow their sales. Most of the time we're building e-commerce engines. Other times we're architecting software. It's always all digital.

Our clients range from large e-commerce enterprises (>$100M per year) to successful mid-stage ($1M - $40M per year) direct to consumer e-commerce brands. You can see the full range client work/portfolio at our website.

We’re a realistic group, not looking for rockstar ninja wizards. Our team resides (or is working from) New York City, Warsaw, Lisbon, The Netherlands, Brazil, Dominican Republic, and Norway. We do regular team meets up all over the world (or we did before Covid).

We're looking for an experienced backend engineer to join our team. Typical work would include:

  • Building custom applications for eCommerce stores doing $3M-$50M per year
  • Working with and building GraphQL APIs
  • Building custom admin panels for Shopify

A perfect candidate has well-formed opinions, great discipline, naturally established work habits, and takes delight in their work.

A great quote about what we're looking for from people who have been managing remote teams longer than us:

"Everyone has to be an A-player. Remote team members are used to four to six hours of focused, uninterrupted work every day. You have to be able to get through problems on your own and be productive without asking for help. There’s no substitute for skill and experience in those cases."

We have specific work to be done so can hire quickly. Shopify experience optional but a plus!

The Logikcull internship program is for underrepresented and underserved individuals with an interest in the technology space. We will select three individuals for a 3-month long program in which they will be immersed in our Engineering, Product Support, and People departments. This program is an excellent opportunity for individuals trying to transition into the technology space, such as parents returning to the workforce, military veterans returning from duty, or recent graduates from technology bootcamps. Interns will be expected to complete online courses throughout the fall and present their learnings on a bi-weekly basis to a small group of Logikbots (that’s what we call ourselves!). They will work hand-in-hand with a person from their department on projects in their field. In addition, interns will present their overall learnings at the end of the internship at a Logikcull All Hands meeting.

Why we do what we do:

Ever watch a crime show and at the last minute the expert researchers were able to find that needle-in-a-haystack e-mail that proves the guilt of the hard-core criminal and saves the day? Well, taking away all the dramatics, that is what Logikcull’s software does. You plug data into our software and are able to easily and quickly search for what you’re looking for. Voila! No mysterious expert researchers necessary ;-)

Logikcull’s mission is to democratize discovery. The costs and risks associated with complex data projects like e-discovery, responding to FOIA requests, and conducting internal investigations are skyrocketing as the amount of data increases. Logikcull is transforming these tasks so they can be completed in minutes, by anyone, anywhere. As a result, our customers--modern legal teams from solo attorneys to massive law firms, Fortune 500 companies, and leading non-profit organizations -- can find and use important information quickly so they can focus on their important work, like pursuing a better democracy or saving the Earth.

The team you’ll be joining:

Logikcull Engineering comprises over 30 engineers located across North America and the UK. We operate as small, collaborative squads spanning three disciplines:

-Discovery Platform-The web application in which our customers search and review their documents -Data Processing-The backend application that extracts, transforms, and indexes customer documents -Engineering Platform-The infrastructure that hosts and delivers changes to our applications and data stores

We work together with members of our Design and Product teams to develop a platform that consistently earns some of the best user and analyst reviews in the industry. Engineers enjoy a vibrant company culture and outstanding levels of camaraderie with their co-workers; employee feedback consistently gives top marks for engagement, retention, and quality of life (check out our Glassdoor

Program Specifics:

The internship will be from September 8 - November 30th (dates may be adjusted slightly) Interns will be expected to work 40 hours per week, M-F Compensation will be $3,000/mo with an additional $250/mo given to cover fringe benefits, such as internet costs, phone bills, gym memberships, etc. Logikcull will provide a work laptop, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Named as a Rising Star on the 2019 Forbes 100 Cloud List, Gatsby has quickly grown to be one of the largest and most exciting open source projects on the web. We’re a modern website framework that builds performance into every website by leveraging the latest web technologies. Create blazing fast, compelling apps and websites without needing to become a performance expert.

As a remote-first, community-focused team, Gatsby’s core values include transparency (we work in public most of the time); creating a safe, high-trust team; building incredible developer experiences; maintaining a healthy working environment; and helping deliver web experiences that feel amazing to use on every device and connection type.

Why we're hiring

Gatsby is growing fast, and we need help improving Gatsby’s learning experience to ensure our users are successful!

We’ve invested heavily in documentation. Though the responsibility of documenting core Gatsby functionality is shared across the organization, we need a dedicated team to coordinate, prioritize, iterate, scope, and collaborate on the documentation process.

Why this is interesting

You’ll help shape the future of the web by providing tens of thousands of users with documentation; bringing React, Node.js and GraphQL to the content web; setting new standards for website performance and accessibility; and showing the potential of “content mesh” in integrating data sources.

What you'll do on a day-to-day basis

As a Documentation team member, your work will mostly be a mix of four things:

Targeted, methodical documentation creation. We’ve identified key pathways to help people exploring Gatsby for the first time. You’ll think carefully about key user types and creating written content, example code & repos, and audiovisual material to address their needs. These pathways will span both the open source framework, Gatsby, and the commercial product, Gatsby Cloud.

Working with the open source community and creating community-driven documentation. We keep our pulse on the pain points the community is experiencing in order to guide our work. Issues and PRs submitted by community members shed light on the missing or broken parts of their experiences.

In addition, much of Gatsby’s functionality is driven by the community via the plugin ecosystem. The documentation should provide an up-to-date, helpful overview of community plugins available in a given area and direct the user to further resources, even as the ecosystem rapidly grows richer. Documentation-related development.

We’ve been focused recently on the thousand little details that go into a beautiful and accessible UI - from a nested sidebar that expands and remembers where you are, to floating table of contents, feedback box, next/previous buttons at the bottom, breadcrumbs, a dedicated search page, and so on. We’re soon going to be crossing the boundary to creating next-generation developer documentation - allowing users to automatically track their learning journey as they complete Gatsby tutorials, bootstrapping a test suite from human-readable docs, and so on. Work with the rest of the Gatsby team. The Developer Relations team will often build on top of documentation. They can also help direct our efforts based on feedback from the community.

Other teams at Gatsby, such as Core (Open Source), Cloud, and Themes, are quickly shipping features. Everyone is expected to document their feature. (See “why we write”.) The Documentation team works with other team members to identify what docs will need to be written or updated, polish documentation PRs, flesh them out, help them get merged, and create additional, richer material as necessary. As a Documentation team member, you may also work with contractors or partners on more tightly scoped documentation projects.

Experience and skills you should have

Content:

A track record of producing high-quality, written technical communication. Whether produced for your personal blog or for a company (externally or internally), you’ve spent significant amounts of time writing deeply technical material for other engineers. Ability to dive into complex problems and wade through disparate source materials. You won’t always know very much about a specific subject prior to writing about it, possibly because that subject is a Gatsby feature that didn’t previously exist! You have Ability to adjust learning content for a specific audience or outcome. Gatsby has docs in multiple types and formats, each accommodating a different learning style or skill level.

Development:

Professional experience shipping production code and solving user/customer problems. We’ll have to build for new platforms (an Electron app on the desktop!) and create materials in new formats as our ambitions and standards continue to rise.

Building websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Appreciation of all of the working parts of the Web Platform would help you write better docs for people who aren’t yet familiar with Gatsby’s way of doing things. A desire to work in the modern JavaScript ecosystem. Gatsby is built on the shoulders of giants, making use of technologies like Node.js, GraphQL, React, webpack, and Babel.

Collaboration:

Experience editing content (technical or non-technical) produced by others. Perhaps you’ve taken a bunch of assorted READMEs and crafted them into an onboarding guide. Perhaps you spontaneously take a red pen to friends’ essays or blog posts. Perhaps you notice yourself editing Google Docs sent out by colleagues to make them more clear.

Strong personal communication skills. As part of our Documentation team, you’d both directly and indirectly interface with community members. Clear, friendly, and professional communication is fundamental in creating intuitive and compelling resources.

Ready and willing to ask and answer questions. If you’re comfortable saying you’re unsure, asking for help, and reaching out to assist others, you’ll be an incredible addition to our team. Our team thrives because of continuous learning and a willingness to work together.

Nice to have (but not required) experience

You have a background in education. You’ve facilitated workshops or taught at a coding bootcamp. You may even have more formal teaching credentials or experience in curriculum development. Regardless of the subject matter you’ve taught, you understand how people learn. Leveraging that knowledge will enrich individual docs and may inform the way we structure pathways through the documentation.

You’ve maintained documentation in an active repository before. Maybe you’ve helped maintain a popular open source repo, or maybe you’ve worked on internal repos that saw contributions from multiple teams. Previous experience with highly active repo workflows is a definite plus for this role.

You have a passion for web accessibility. As maintainers of a website framework, we have an opportunity to make the web more inclusive and accessible for everyone. Previous experience with accessible web development and content creation would help you to stand out from other candidates.

The best parts of this job

You’ll be empowered to propose ideas for new docs and ecosystem improvements for key documentation pathways.

You’ll be at the cutting edge of website development — working on one of the fastest-growing site building frameworks on the market, digging into the Gatsby’s innovatively architected docs system and codebase, using modern tools such as Node, React, and GraphQL.

You’ll be part of an active, open, friendly community of developers that are really excited about building high-performance, fun-to-use websites.

You’ll be working among highly skilled engineers who have a broad range of experience and are eager to share what they know.

Your role will be key to making Gatsby the next way to build on the web - and a technology that is accessible to the next billion internet users.

The hardest parts of this job

As part of a fast-growing startup, we are often tasked with supporting multiple teams for product launches and events. This requires balancing priorities and working together to ensure we’re working on things that provide the most value. In open source, you’re faced with a nonstop stream of issues and pull requests.

That means you need to develop an intuition of how to prioritize tasks for Documentation/Core team needs and those from the community. The documentation team works in the open–including fielding user feedback via GitHub comments. It’s essential that Gatsby team members act as bridges between communities with a variety of perspectives.

Benefits and perks

Unlimited vacation policy, with a minimum of 15 days paid vacation time Amazing health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family (US only) 3 months of paid parental leave covering both adoption and foster placement Stock options in a fast-growing startup We’re remote first, so skip the commute Set up costs for a home office OR co-working/private office reimbursement New laptop of your choice Wifi and cell phone reimbursement Fly to cool locations 3x/year for company-wide meetups Gatsby Sabbatical: 4 weeks paid vacation after 4 years tenure

Sandbox Banking is looking for an exceptional software engineer who wants to reshape how innovative software is integrated in the financial services industry. We have rapidly growing revenue, are backed by Y Combinator (W17), and have raised seed capital. We are a remote team with employees across the continental US.

Sandbox is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

Product

Sandbox is a universal adapter for banks. It provides financial institutions (FIs) a better way to integrate fintech software with their existing systems.

US regional/community banks and credit unions are looking to overhaul the digital experiences they deliver to customers. Increasingly, they solve this challenge by sourcing software from fintechs — new companies that specialize in building and operating financial services software. Unfortunately, distributing new software to FIs has historically been a long and painful process because of data security and system integration hurdles.

Sandbox empowers FIs and vendors to quickly and safely build new integrations — our Glyue application lets anyone who can use Excel formulas connect banking systems. Furthermore, the platform's fine-grained authentication and permissions model provides FIs with strict control over which people/software can access particular banking data and operations.

FIs and fintechs love the platform. FIs are able to quickly and cost-effectively leverage cutting-edge solutions without compromising on integration; fintechs don't need to spend time and money on activities outside of core product development and distribution.

Why Work at Sandbox?

Small team — your impact will be meaningful Teammates who are smart, curious, and driven to succeed. You will always be learning. Ownership of problems from start to finish Significant customer interaction Your ideas and opinions about the product will matter. Everyone in our company contributes to our product roadmap. You'll use a variety of technologies across our entire software stack Remote-first organization that provides geographic flexibility (although all employees must live in the US) Salary and stock option compensation Your work will transform an entire industry

Responsibilities

Our engineer will need to handle a variety of tasks:

Build, maintain, and extend our Glyue integration platform Provide feedback about Glyue so it can be improved for internal and external users Construct unit and integration tests to help maintain our organization's high software delivery throughput Use JIRA to track development tasks, convey customer project statuses, highlight blockers, and communicate with teammates Write high quality documentation for both customer and internal use Perform basic AWS-based and on premise sysadmin work Identify and vocalize problems as they arise, especially in regards to data security Help solve a multitude of early-stage startup tasks Behave in a manner aligned with our high ethical standards

Qualifications

Talented developers learn new technologies quickly, so we're not obsessed with each candidate's knowledge of particular technologies. That said, we do require applicants to possess a few specific skills and attributes:

Proficiency with Python. Prior experience with the language is required, although our definition of experience is broad and would include undergraduate/graduate assignments, demonstrable project work, and coding bootcamps. Our hiring process involves technical interviews for which knowledge of Python is necessary. Proficiency with both Windows and Linux Understanding of basic software design patterns, unit testing, object-oriented language principles, functional language principles, and networking Strong verbal and written communication skills in English Strong deductive and inductive reasoning abilities Highly organized and capable of tracking current status, blockers, and next steps across multiple projects Willingness to live and work in the US There are additional requirements related to logistics and behavior:

Ability to work from our office in downtown Boston, MA for at least two weeks at start of employment. Sandbox will cover travel expense for employee during this period. Legal authorization to work for Sandbox Banking. NOTE: We are unable to sponsor work visas at this time. Willingness and ability to proactively collaborate with our customers and project managers. To succeed, this individual will need to constantly discuss/record/broadcast business processes and requirements. There are times when acquiring a single piece of critical information requires two or three conversations with different project stakeholders; this engineer must be unrelenting in such scenarios. Fanatical passion for delivering the best possible experience to users Willingness to re-prioritize work as product hypotheses and requirements change Obsession with code quality, design patterns, documentation, testing, and other aspects of software engineering that empower teams to maintain high productivity over time Team-first attitude coupled with an unrelenting desire to win Experience in the following areas will be considered a bonus:

Financial services programming (especially for banks or vendors) Early-stage startups Software integration projects Consulting SaaS product development Information security and regulatory compliance JavaScript, C#, Java, Django, Postgres, HTML, CSS, front-end JS frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, Vue), and AWS Compensation

Salary will be competitive for our stage of company, and the role includes a stock option package that provides significant upside. It’s important to us that our early employees win if the company succeeds.

Next Steps

Please email resumes, CVs, and other relevant materials to team@sandboxbanking.com along with a brief description of why you’re interested in the role.

vHow we work

The Frontend team is responsible for all code that runs in a browser. Be it the web apps of Twist and Todoist, browser extensions, electron apps or our landing pages.

Our main product work happens inside cross-disciplinary teams, that we call squads. You can read more about this in our blog. We have a rotating Hero role whose main responsibility is to tackle support issues, fix bugs and work on smaller improvements. On top of that everybody on the team gets a day per week to spend on Housekeeping; during this time we pay back technical debt, fix bugs and in general improve the health of our code base.

We believe in picking the most effective tools to do our best work. At the moment this means most of our communication happens asynchronously in Twist. Code and bugs are managed and reviewed in GitHub. Team meetings are done in Zoom.

Day-to-day work

What does your work look like on a day-to-day basis:

  • Implement features: From proposal, through specification and implementation, to maintenance. You're encouraged and expected to propose things that you think can be a good addition to the product.
  • Provide feedback: When planning a feature you're expected to provide feedback on expected challenges and unknowns as early as possible.
  • Improve the code quality: With time, our code accumulated some technical debt, which we pay off. Often we do it while we make features, but we also dedicate time to housekeeping each week.
  • Be a responsible & exemplary team member: We do code reviews, refactor code, learn new things and share our knowledge. You might also be appointed mentor of a new comer
  • Lead a squad: From time to time you might be a squad leader which bears the responsibility for the success of the project. In practical terms, you plan the squad work and orchestrate its execution. You balance this activity with hands-on work within the same squad.
  • Be a Hero: During this time you'll be working closely with support to triage and fix bugs from users. Also, you help speed up code reviews and support other teams in their projects.

Indicators that this could be a good role for you:

  • You feel that our values resonate with yours, and you see how they can act as guidance for your day-to-day work.
  • You have 5+ years of frontend development experience.
  • You have experience in building complex interactive web applications.
  • You have solid knowledge of modern JavaScript and React (Bonus: Redux)
  • You have experience in writing automated unit, integration or end-to-end tests.
  • You have experience in measuring, analyzing and fixing performance problems.
  • You're able to use and customize tools (e.g. webpack) to streamline our development and build processes.
  • You're able to work autonomously and stay self-motivated. Previous experience working in remote team is a bonus.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English.

Requirements A complete application includes:

  • A resume or manually entered experience (you can choose your preference).
  • Thoughtful, thorough responses to all the application questions. The process will be as follows:

You stay on top of the latest developments in web technologies.

We’re all about stability. We’ve been in business since 1969!

You’re all about cutting edge UX.

We’re a plant factory. We manufacture trees, shrubs and flowers.

You can help us deliver what we have to our customers.

Through a web-app built in Angular.

You’re also late to the party, but that’s ok. We’re pretty far along in our project, but front-end work never truly ends, right?

So, what does our web app do? Essentially, it’s our own ERP, managing everything; sales forecasting, production planning, production, inventory, sales and order management, shipping, payroll and general ledger.

The production functions are live. The sales is close to going live. The general ledger stuff is still in our legacy system.

A year ago, our front-end employee left us. We haven’t found the right person to replace him yet. We’d rather have nobody than have the wrong person!

Pay depends on...a lot of things! How great are you at Angular? What have you accomplished in the past? How confident do we feel that you can do what we need?

To see who we are and some of the types of things we do, take a look at our websites: lancasterfarms.com, lfplantoutlet.com, lfoutdoorliving.com and plantpop.com. And, of course, once we get talking we’ll show you our Angular app.

Job description

(Remote, Full-Time, Anywhere in the World)

We are looking for a skilled and passionate Full Stack Software Engineer to join our Tech Team to build and scale effective software solutions. We are in need of an enthusiastic self-starter with expertise in building highly functional solutions involving multiple systems using the Javascript (Node, Express, React stack).

What We Do

We work with niche companies in the US, Canada, the UK to restructure and automate their operation so that their businesses can grow 5-10x. We do that by effectively analyzing their business, streamlining their processes, and designing an effective automation solution that we then implement on our robust IT stack.

We make extensive use of technologies that help us accomplish results with less work — making everyone inside of our global organization more effective.

We heavily leverage:

Amazon AWS's serverless technologies and microservices for our front-end, back-end, and mobile apps (Lambda, Amplify, Cognito, S3, etc.).

Zoho's CRM and ERP Tools (Desk, Books, etc.).

Vonage/Nexmo-based telephony and communications solutions (Vonage Business Phone, Nexmo Voice/SMS, OpenTalk, etc.).

We are always looking for new technologies and welcome team members adding things to our technology stack so we can deliver more results more effectively.

What You Will Do

As an Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering the solution as per requirements put together by our Creative and Business Analysis Teams. Depending on your level, you will be responsible for either the entire project (with other engineers working in your project team) or for a part of it.

Your ultimate deliverable will be to effectively build a solution that will be implemented in the client's business and run successfully going forward.

In doing so, you will:

Design and architect complex solutions involving web apps (front+back), custom CRM/ERP's, programmable telephony, and occasionally mobile apps.

Deliver and implement your solutions.

Create effective monitoring of the solutions for effective usage and scalability.

Do anything else you deem necessary to accomplish your result.

Requirements

You are:

Responsible and driven by results.

Genuinely interested in technology.

Willing to learn, grow, and admit mistakes.

Able to communicate with other people on the project's team effectively.

You have:

A solid knowledge of Node.js, React, Express, and TypeScript.

Experience with complex SQL and NoSQL databases.

Experience with APIs to connect complex applications.

Effective written and verbal English to communicate with our international team.

Basic understanding of DevOps and SDLC to cooperate with other developers in building the product.

Will be a good plus:

Experience with Amazon AWS, serverless technologies, and microservices on its platform.

Experience with CRM and ERP systems such as Zoho and others.

What We Offer

Results-Focused Approach to Work

We do not look at people's activities, the number of lines of code written, etc., as the measure of success. We look strictly at the results in effectively delivered products.

Results Based Compensation Schedule

There is base pay and project bonus pay. Base pay varies significantly by the Engineer's level of ability and responsibility (Lead/Associate/Assistant) that the Engineer takes on projects - this level is reassessed after every project that the Engineer completes. Projects upon completion are rewarded with a bonus - bonus depends on the delivery of all requirements assigned to the Engineer, timeliness of delivery, rate of errors, and the amount of management attention needed in the project. Engineers who can deliver functional solutions that match requirements quickly and with little management action to correct errors get the best rewards and promotions in the organization.

Freely Arranged Schedule

You decide when you want to work. What we expect from you are results. There is a daily stand-up call — but outside of it, you can manage your schedule as you prefer.

Work as an Engineer, Not Just a Coder

Our Engineers work to build solutions and not just to write code. You will have freedom in how you want to architect the solutions you are making and we will heavily encourage initiative on your part.

Growth Within Our Organization

We are a dynamic and growing organization with a team spread around multiple continents. If you prove yourself as a responsible, driven and motivated individual, there will be opportunities for you to lead projects and manage tech teams.

Our candidate selection process is designed to assess people strictly by their merit. We do not make you go through a long round of interviews, instead, we follow a straight-forward sequence:

  1. Job Application Form.

  2. Online Skills Assessment.

  3. Interview.

  4. Paid Practical Assignment.

  5. Evaluation and Offer.

We’re Dashwork Studio, a small remote team of 4 based spread across India, Greece, and Portugal. We make great stuff with WordPress.

Codestag — A premium WordPress theme shop where we create handy, user-friendly and modern WordPress themes. We sell themes across our own website, ThemeForest (Envato), and WordPress.com

AnalogWP – At AnalogWP, we offer a free/premium plugin called “Style Kits” for Elementor page builder. Style Kits offers additional global controls over Elementor along with a set of templates, blocks, and theme style kits.

We’re currently looking for someone to extend features for Analog and maintain Codestag, and build fast, secure, and maintainable code in PHP.

Note that this is a 100% remote position.

The Job

Your primary role would be to extend and maintain features at our Style Kits plugin, but not limited to that. You’ll also be maintaining the backend for Style Kits template publishing, Codestag and product support for Style Kits (all of us do it, as it helps understand the product better and gives a chance to know the end-users).

I need a talented developer to take over the development of Style Kits plugin. I will be reviewing your pull requests myself. Style Kits makes heavy use of both PHP and React, so you must be experienced with that.

You should be…

Excited to work in a team-oriented environment with an emphasis on growing and helping one another Able to translate technical descriptions into detailed engineering implementation tasks Detail-oriented & curious, with a drive to understand and solve technical challenges A self-starter, able to work in a remote environment without constant supervision Committed to constant improvement, learning, sharing your knowledge, and building meaningful relationships as a member of a highly efficient, fast-paced team Excited to work in a team-oriented environment with an emphasis on growing and helping one another Bonus points if you also have…

Experience working with Elementor Experience working with WooCommerce Experience working with React.js + REST API Experience with Gutenberg About you

You’re a passionate developer who respects old code no matter how ugly it looks. You enjoy figuring out how an old code base works, refactoring it and taking on the challenges that come with it. You’ll have the opportunity to share your ideas openly and learn from others.

You own your successes and failures. When a project you’re leading turns into a disaster, you own it and you learn from it. You never point the finger at others.

You’re able to work with little to no supervision and not afraid to ask for help when needed. You can do your best work in isolation without interruption and can formulate a plan of action.

Our plugins are built on top of WordPress. We follow a superset of the WordPress coding standards and actively invest in tooling & testing to improve both the quality of our products and the happiness of our team building them.

Here are some things you may do on a given day:

Create and review Github issues based on user feedback and take action Review a pull request from another team member for readability, maintainability, and adherence to standards, and provide suggested improvements Handle support requests, we all do this every day Contribute to the functionality of internal tooling or public-facing websites Who you’ll work with:

Ram Ratan Maurya, Lead Developer – You’ll work with Ram on a daily basis to deliver high quality, well planned, efficient executed code. He is the person behind Style Kits John Fraskos, Lead Designer – You’ll work with John to discuss features and plans, take his Github issues and convert them into code. John handles most of the contents from our templates library and might need assistance from time to time to ensure everything works as expected. Krishna Kant Chaurasia, WordPress Developer – Krishna maintains themes over at Codestag and keeps an eye on support actively. He also occasionally helps with the development of Style Kits and Style Kits Pro. Fabio Lopes, Marketing and Design – Fabio is actively engaged in Elementor design and looks for the finest marketing strategies to integrate into our product.

Backend engineers build the core of Stripe products, services and APIs in spectacularly robust fashion. Connect builds infrastructure for marketplaces and platforms to incorporate payments into their products. It was launched nearly six years ago, and today it is Stripe’s most successful and differentiated product, used by startups and leading global technology companies, alike. It derives its name from creating connections between Stripe accounts and allowing funds flows between them. We have backend engineers in almost every team across Stripe, and in that role, you’ll be making some of the most significant decisions for the company. You’ll get to work with other engineers to build delightful features that span various parts of the system, as well as our business, sales and operations teams to understand and solve our users’ pain points.

You will:

  • Design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and systems across Stripe’s engineering teams
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large-scale
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes
  • You may be fit for this role if you:
  • Enjoy and have experience building APIs
  • Think about systems and services and write high quality code. We work mostly in Ruby, with some Scala and Go. However, languages can be learned: we care much more about your general engineering skill than knowledge of a particular language or framework.
  • Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems
  • Take pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different expertise (for example, ¼ of Stripes work in a country that’s different from the one they grew up in). Almost every role at Stripe collaborates with some engineers, from Sales and Support in sharing feedback from our customers; to Legal and Accounting in supporting our systems for tracking money movement and reporting around the world. It’s not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas. For instance, we have wonderful team members who are really focused on their customers’ needs and building amazing user experiences, but didn’t work on APIs before joining Stripe.

You might work on:

  • Build a new API for our users, or iterate on existing APIs
  • Launch a new market or payment method
  • Work with our Analytics and Fraud teams to reduce chargebacks and declines
  • Build new tools for our business teams
  • Build new systems to securely store sensitive data
  • What’s it like to work at Stripe?

Stripe is helping the internet fulfill its potential as a platform for economic progress by building software tools that accelerate global economic access and technological development. Stripe makes it easy to start, run and scale an internet business from anywhere in the world. Stripe is, at its heart, an engineering company. To provide a missing pillar of core internet infrastructure, we hire people with a broad set of technical skills (and from a wide variety of backgrounds) who are ready to take on some of the most challenging problems in the industry – from reliably handling 100M API requests per day, to building adaptive machine learning as a result of years of data science and infrastructure work, and enabling entrepreneurs worldwide to start a global internet business.

We look at Stripe as a constant work in progress and the same is true of our people; for all of us, we believe the best is yet to come. We’re here to support each other in our curiosity and creativity – which we pursue through thoughtful discussion and knowledge-sharing among a diverse set of peers and colleagues. We encourage all engineers to transition teams once every year and a half and also take on short-term projects with other teams across Stripe. This enables engineers to learn how different parts of Stripe work while also establishing stronger ties and cross-pollination between groups. We contribute to existing open-source projects and the people working on them, and we release several tools as open-source. We want to work in a company of warm, inclusive people who treat their colleagues exceptionally well. The kind of people who are committed to going out of their way to help other Stripes in the short-term and pushing them to improve over the long-term (by helping them to get better at what they do). We’re a highly cross-functional organization and view that as part of the fun: we design our space to encourage as much collaboration as possible. We have long tables in the kitchen for a reason (to enable everyone to meet new people and learn from them). We also have a culture of transparency that we carry through to email communication, ensuring that Stripes all around the world have the information they need to make good local decisions. In both our products and our people, we aim to reflect, represent and advocate for all of our users, globally. Our users transcend geography, culture and language; what we share, collectively, is a drive to create a fairer, more economically interconnected world.

Remote Software Engineer

Exciting times! At Vavato we are building a development team from scratch to further the development of our auction platform, initially built by a 3rd party agency.

You will join our brand new IT department and team, have a high degree of responsibility and freedom to execute your job, and high impact on a rocket ship growth organization.

Culture

Work hard, play hard! At Vavato you will find a relaxed, casual atmosphere (and occasionally see post it blocks flying down the hallway in an attempt to punish a bad joke). We are young in spirit and lighthearted, but work hard to reach our goals.

We expect everyone to take initiative and point out things we could be doing better or could do to improve the #HAPPYVAVATO experience for our buyers and sellers. Our trio of CEO's is always happy to listen to your concerns and implement the best ideas. Together we are smarter and stronger.

You

We are looking for highly motivated individuals willing to be part of a growing start-up / scale-up adventure. We expect you to take full ownership of your work, work hard, especially when needed - production issues can occur and have to be tackled, issues arise daily that require immediate attention to avoid hurting the company's bottom line. We try to structure work as best as we can, but sometimes you will have to cope with chaos.

We expect you to help carry the load and the company forward. There is plenty of room for learning and growth in our team, and we're just starting out. The intention is to make this company 10x bigger than it is today. Plenty of opportunities will be available down the road for people who are willing and capable.

We also expect you to have fun, love your job, love our customers, and enjoy the company of your colleagues ;)

Practices / Values

  • We deploy multiple times a day to production with zero downtime using Continuous Delivery
  • We follow the open source model with our CTO being the benevolent dictator on the product and everyone contributing through pull requests
  • We believe in the values of Software Craftsmanship and do things "the right way", even under pressure.
  • We work directly with the stakeholders within the company without any proxy between the people who need a feature and the people working on it
  • We do unit testing, integration testing, black box testing and testing spanning the whole stack. * This way you know that code that hits master is production ready.
  • We use Kanban and release features as they become ready, without ever doing big bang releases and without creating "a release".
  • All of your code will be reviewed by a peer before being put into production to accelerate your learning and for your own ease of mind
  • Everything in our infrastructure is scripted either through Terraform or Ansible to ensure reproducible builds and to be disaster proof
  • We have hourly full backups of the database in case anything goes wrong
  • We have tested our disaster recovery plan extensively
  • We use trunk-based development, our branches are very short lived, and we employ feature toggles to ship code to production as early as possible without making it visible to users

Stack

We don't expect you to know everything in the list, but the more the merrier. In the end, what really counts is your willingness to learn and capacity to solve problems in an efficient and simple way. If you're excited to learn any of those, we're happy to sponsor you!

New Vector is the open source software development startup which employs the core team behind Matrix.org – the leading project for secure open decentralised communication. Matrix’s mission is to create a universal open network and protocol for real-time communication. New Vector builds flagship apps for Matrix such as Riot.im as well as contributing to the core Matrix open source clients, SDKs, servers, bridges and the protocol itself.

We believe that the future of the internet should be decentralised and open, that previously siloed communications platforms should be interoperable and that individuals should control their own data and choose who they share it with.

Ultimately, our aim is to make it as simple to message or video call anyone in the world as it is to send them an email.

Our products are for everyone and we know we cannot succeed without a diverse team. Our hiring process is designed to be humane and give candidates the best possible chance to show us what you can do. If we ever fall down on this, please let us know.

The Role

You'll spend most of your time working on Synapse the reference implementation of the Matrix spec. You can take a look at the code on here. Give it a spin!

Synapse is used by millions of people globally, from large governmental organisations like the French Civil Service through to community groups and open source projects like KDE and Wikimedia.

This role is about improving the performance and reliability of Synapse, implementing new features to further evolve the spec and generally making it as easy as possible for anyone to access secure, decentralised communication software.

Example recent projects:-

Improve Synapse Performance - With thousands of deployments in production today, Synapse is the dominant homeserver implementation in the Matrix ecosystem and the technology that backs the matrix.org homeserver. Written in Python/Twisted, there is massive scope for performance improvements as the schema and algorithms were originally written to prove the Matrix APIs rather than for efficiency. Today usage of the Synapse deployment on matrix.org is growing exponentially and it is vital that we keep pace with the growth of the network. Rearchitecting the data model to improve user data privacy. You can also check out our public roadmap.

Since (almost) everything we do is open source you can get a great feel for exactly what it would be like to work on Riot, why not join our developer channel at #synapse-dev:matrix.org to provide a window into the core team and the community. Come and say hi!

Requirements

About you

The most important thing is that you believe passionately in the mission of decentralisation of the internet. More specifically that you believe that communications should not be centralised in the hands of a small number of very large organisations and instead individuals should control their own data and choose who they share it with.

Additionally we are looking for someone who is:

  • Smart, curious and enthusiastic
  • Likes to ship early and often
  • Likes to write tests :)
  • A tireless advocate of code quality (understanding the need for trade-offs in the short term whilst keeping us honest in the long term)
  • Is articulate and empathetic.
  • Is comfortable with the pace, trade offs and ambiguity of an early stage startup (specifically: how to take care of yourself and get your work done without working crazy hours).

Your experience

We don’t have hard requirements for the role, we just want to build the best possible team, but as a bonus it would be great if some of the following are true.

  • Experience with Python and Twisted
  • Experience of designing, building and maintaining distributed systems at scale
  • Experience maintaining and/or contributing to open source projects
  • Designing REST APIs with flexibility and extensibility in mind.
  • Experience working in a continuous delivery environment
  • Experience in IM or VoIP communications I f you have any questions before making an application reach out to Neil (@neilj:matrix.org) via https://riot.im/app/

Benefits

Our general approach is to treat people like adults and acknowledge that by being flexible we create an environment for people to do their best work. For more details here is our manifesto. That said specific points that differentiate us.

Work (almost) full time on FOSS projects with high visibility and a large enthusiastic community Since our technology is relevant to anything that requires real-time comms, the role provides exposure to a wide range of domains from web and app dev through to VR, VoIP and IoT. Family friendly environment, many of the team have small children and we look to accommodate that as best we can. People tend to stay with the company for a long time, we take this a sign that we have a cohesive supportive culture, that we have engaging challenging work and that people can develop their skills and careers here for the long term. New Vector does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, colour, religion, age, national origin, marital status, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other reason prohibited by law in provision of employment opportunities and benefits.
