Our main tool for coordinating our day-to-day work is Gitlab. We not only use it as central git host, but also for our complete CI pipeline, to trigger and execute deployments with it and track our work items (and bugs 🐛) with Gitlab boards.

Developers own the development of their improvements and features and guide them until they are in production. And while some parts of the application are worked on mostly by a smaller subset of the team, we practice shared code ownership.

We practice a branch-based development workflow and do code reviews via merge requests (Gitlab-speak for pull requests). To enable quick feedback-cycles we aim for short-lived branches and provide automated means to deploy every branch to their own environment.

We put a strong emphasis on automated testing and having a test coverage that follows the testing pyramid. And as with most things, we aim to get better at these practices, which means we’re not perfect. 😇

TrainerRoad is looking to expand our engineering group. We're looking for smart software engineers who "get things done." We’re interested in remote candidates in the USA or candidates interested in working in our Reno office.

Areas of work include React, TypeScript, Electron and React Native.

App Development We're moving our apps from cross-platform Xamarin to Electron/React Native. You'd be involved in this process and would work with experienced engineers to rebuild a section of the app.

Our goal is to increase the speed of app development. We do this through hot module reloading, fast computers, a great build chain, automated testing, clear and well-defined issues and a dedicated QA team that tests every PR.

We track what our users do, learn from that and improve the product. We want this loop to be a quick as possible.

Our website is built in Angular 2+ and there's the opportunity to work on the web in Angular.

This job is primarily for Electron (using React) and React Native app development, but there's room for someone to move to the web in the future or split their time between web/app.

Engineering Principles we believe in

  • Write good code, but not necessarily great code.
  • Good code ships, great code gets "tinkered" with and debated about ad nauseam.
  • Good code is understandable.
  • We admit it, we've made things too complex in the past. We've had complex class hierarchies and really shown off our CS skills.
  • Sure, there's fewer lines of code, but it takes someone a few days to figure out what's going on and it's easy to write bugs.

We believe in a few more lines of code for the sake of clarity and debugging ease.

  • Good code is testable, and we're pragmatic about testing.
  • You don't get the same testing ROI for every line of code. We believe to test the areas that are most likely to break, are tricky or are likely to be changed. We still run thousands of unit tests per build, but we're not testing 1+1 = 2.
  • Quick builds will set you free!
  • To be a successful engineer, you need to get into "flow" (more on that below) as often as you can. That's why we love hot module reloading.
  • We want just enough process to be awesome, and nothing more.
  • We have engineers review issues before a sprint for clarity and completeness. When they submit a PR there's always code review, UI/Unit tests run, then QA manually tests.
  • For the web, we automatically push every PR that's merged into Master.

For the app, we do weekly releases where there's a final regression test with all merged PRs from the previous week.

Our process prevents bugs/regressions and ultimately saves a lot of time.

  • Long-running branches are the devil
  • Often times projects will take weeks/months before they are launched.
  • Instead of experiencing a merge/testing hell at the end of the project we encourage small PRs into master with a "feature flag" on the new project that allows employees to use the feature in production but not our users.

Cool Things we Do

  • Every PR has a set of unit tests and automated UI tests run against it.
  • Every PR is code reviewed.
  • We have a dedicated QA team to manually check your PR (it requires four testers to sign off).
  • Every web PR that is approved is automatically deployed (CI).
  • We've got a beta system that has a flow of production data that helps you develop and test your code without worry of breaking things.
  • Everything is hosted on Azure. There's plenty of dev/beta/test servers and databases to use.
  • The web and app team have their own Product Managers.
  • We run two-week sprints. The web/app team reviews, estimates, and discusses all sprint issues before they are free to be worked.
  • We often pair program.
  • The majority of our engineers are remote.
  • We have a skilled design team that handles the HTML/LESS for app and website.

Who We're Looking For

We want smart engineers who get shit done! Not only do you have to be smart, but you also have to be pragmatic.

Let's say you need to paint a room white.

Smart and Pragmatic Engineer: A pragmatic engineer fills up a sprayer (rather than use a paintbrush), gets to work, and makes sure they don't paint themselves into a corner.

Smart Engineer (but not pragmatic): A smart engineer who's not pragmatic might design a system to change the color of the room in just 30 seconds. Sure, it would take 2 months to build the system but we could change colors so quickly! It's totally optimized for repainting!

If the second example sounds like you, please do not apply. We know it's fun to go hog wild in projects but we need to "get shit done". There's a whole line of other engineers and designers waiting for that room to get painted so they can do their own work on it.

We're a Team, not a Family It sounds harsh to say, but we're not a Family. I know lots of businesses call themselves a family, but I think it's BS. If you get drunk at work and yell at someone, we're going to let you go (although we would give Grandma a pass at Thanksgiving).

What's unlimited vacation mean? The CEO of TrainerRoad used to be an engineer at a Fortune 500 company where life was a grind. We believe employees put out their best work when they are happy and not burnt out.

If your brain just isn't working at 3 pm, we encourage employees to go home and rest up. It does no one any good to sit and stare at the computer screen for another two hours. We don't track that time.

Employees generally shoot for around four weeks of REAL vacation time (no slack checking) but some take more, and some take less. The thing we care about is how productive you can be and how much value you can add to the company. Bottom line, we want people who are passionate and get things done. If you meet those requirements, everything else works itself out.

That being said, if you end up taking massive amounts of vacation, come in late, leave early and aren't producing outstanding work we're going to have a problem.

How do you work? We're big believers in Deep Work and Flow. If you're not turning off Slack (snooze), going DND on your phone and shutting off the world for multiple hours a day you're probably not being as productive as you could be. The idea is a developer should be able to work on a chunk of work that they understand distraction-free for multiple hours totally. This is the only way the company moves forward.

We try to work as pragmatically as we can. We have excellent designers on staff who go from mockups to responsive HTML with light javascript work.

Development uses Github with a strict pull request process. We test, comment, refactor and improve each other's pull requests.

We have a QA team (we call them the Test Team) that checks every PR and does full regression checks for each App release, and we're continually getting more automated.

We have an Automation Team that only focuses on writing UI tests to speed up testing and find bugs faster.

We can one-click deploy our app on Alpha, Beta, and Production channels.

We can one-click deploy our website to Azure (includes smoke tests and warm up).

We have nightly builds that deploy to Test Flight and Google Play.

We often pair program via Slack.

We work off bi-weekly sprint issue lists on Github.

Developers get the super fast machines and awesome equipment. If it's going to let you be more productive, we want to spend the money on it.

Required Skills

We are building complex software solutions for the auction industry using Node.js and Vue.js within Laravel and you will need to have experience in the following areas if you are going to succeed in this role. We have a great team that will help and mentor you through learning our architecture, and you will be involved in both the upgrade of our legacy auction platforms and the creation of our new marketplace products.

JavaScript advanced knowledge. You will have a deep knowledge of JavaScript in terms of frameworks and libraries for designing and implementing front-end architecture and analysing dependencies among user interactions. You should know how to use various JavaScript frameworks and libraries in a single project while avoiding compatibility conflicts.

Programming paradigms. You will know other programming paradigms such as MVC, OOP, and functional programming, which support programming concepts that help create reusable and readable front-end code.

Single-page applications (SPAs). You will have experience of Vue.js to enable user actions to trigger re-rendering (redrawing) processes on other UI elements without reloading the whole page.

You will also be comfortable working with hybrid environments and know which approach is appropriate for the specific project and how to implement it.

Networking protocols. You will understand the REST architectural style and standard networking protocols designed for web application environments.

Our projects require high interaction between the back-end and front-end to deliver a real time auction bidding experience via Node.js and dynamic media streams—you will need to be comfortable working with more advanced protocols such as web sockets.

Security. You should be familiar with web security concepts and how to integrate user authentication and authorisation into our application’s front-end, specifically as we have to adhere to anti-money laundering protocols,

You should be familiar with the HTTPS protocol, know how to avoid cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, and have experience implementing user session management and token-based authentication and authorization.

Package managers. Our web applications contain a lot of JavaScript dependencies, you will be experienced working with package managers to manage our JavaScript library dependencies and avoid version collisions.

JavaScript bundlers and task runners. You willknow how to use these tools to develop SPAs effectively. You will be able to configure the automation of repetitive tasks in front-end development without additional tools. You will know how to deliver test-driven development and behaviour-driven development to ensure our applications are front-end testable.

Advanced optimization. Complex front-end architectures can contain a lot of source code with redundant dependencies, a situation which requires additional optimisation, you will be comfortable working to drive optimum code efficiency with proper documentation for the wider development teams.

You will also know how to implement the lazy-loading technique, where content is downloaded invisibly as a user browses or scrolls web pages.

Back-end development. You will work closely with our back-end developers in order to design API calls which define communication between an application’s front-end and back-end.

You may be called upon to start building front-end architecture without any support or data from an application’s back-end. In this case, you will need to know how to design and develop your own API calls to mock (fake) the data that will later be provided from the back-end.

Person profile

You will be an approachable problem solver, a team player who enjoys the challenge of figuring out commercially led solutions for our client operations. You understand the importance of communication when there are roadblocks, and you have a very keen eye for detail, driving code efficiency and documenting your work to help the entire team up their skillsets.

In addition, much of Gatsby’s functionality is driven by the community via the plugin ecosystem. The documentation should provide an up-to-date, helpful overview of community plugins available in a given area and direct the user to further resources, even as the ecosystem rapidly grows richer. We’ve been focused recently on the thousand little details that go into a beautiful and accessible UI - from a nested sidebar that expands and remembers where you are, to floating table of contents, feedback box, next/previous buttons at the bottom, breadcrumbs, a dedicated search page, and so on. We’re soon going to be crossing the boundary to creating next-generation developer documentation - allowing users to automatically track their learning journey as they complete Gatsby tutorials, bootstrapping a test suite from human-readable docs, and so on. Content:

A track record of producing high-quality, written technical communication. Whether produced for your personal blog or for a company (externally or internally), you’ve spent significant amounts of time writing deeply technical material for other engineers. Ability to dive into complex problems and wade through disparate source materials. You won’t always know very much about a specific subject prior to writing about it, possibly because that subject is a Gatsby feature that didn’t previously exist! Development:

Professional experience shipping production code and solving user/customer problems. We’ll have to build for new platforms (an Electron app on the desktop!) and create materials in new formats as our ambitions and standards continue to rise.

Building websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Appreciation of all of the working parts of the Web Platform would help you write better docs for people who aren’t yet familiar with Gatsby’s way of doing things. A desire to work in the modern JavaScript ecosystem. Gatsby is built on the shoulders of giants, making use of technologies like Node.js, GraphQL, React, webpack, and Babel.

Collaboration:

Experience editing content (technical or non-technical) produced by others. Perhaps you’ve taken a bunch of assorted READMEs and crafted them into an onboarding guide. Perhaps you spontaneously take a red pen to friends’ essays or blog posts. Perhaps you notice yourself editing Google Docs sent out by colleagues to make them more clear.

vHow we work

The Frontend team is responsible for all code that runs in a browser. Be it the web apps of Twist and Todoist, browser extensions, electron apps or our landing pages.

Our main product work happens inside cross-disciplinary teams, that we call squads. You can read more about this in our blog. We have a rotating Hero role whose main responsibility is to tackle support issues, fix bugs and work on smaller improvements. On top of that everybody on the team gets a day per week to spend on Housekeeping; during this time we pay back technical debt, fix bugs and in general improve the health of our code base.

We believe in picking the most effective tools to do our best work. At the moment this means most of our communication happens asynchronously in Twist. Code and bugs are managed and reviewed in GitHub. Team meetings are done in Zoom.

Day-to-day work

What does your work look like on a day-to-day basis:

  • Implement features: From proposal, through specification and implementation, to maintenance. You're encouraged and expected to propose things that you think can be a good addition to the product.
