Otis is looking for talented frontend engineers to bring our vision of democratizing wealth to life. We're not looking for rockstars or ninjas; we're simply looking for smart people who are always willing to learn, enjoy collaborating, and never shy away from a challenge. You'll be joining a lean engineering team working to build a consumer facing app at the intersection of culture and fintech, poised to scale in the coming year.

What you'll do:

  • As a front end engineer, you will play a key role building our mobile app in React Native and Redux.
  • This includes building new features, maintaining and improving our codebase, and providing feedback on APIs and architecture.
  • Our team is highly collaborative, and you’ll also have the chance to provide feedback on everything from culture to architecture, as well as team operations and the overall product.

 Who you are:

  • You have 2+ years experience with React or Vue.
  • You are obsessed with clean code. You take pride in great class design and choosing the right level of abstraction. Tests are your best friend.
  • You love keeping up with the latest developments in the mobile world. Last year, you were mad that Hooks for React hadn't been released yet.
  • You're familiar with REST APIs. You immediately wrinkle your nose when you see POST /update_name.
  • We prefer generalists over specialists and look for candidates with a history of pushing past their comfort zone and learning new things.
  • You understand—and are excited to join—an early stage company and have the opportunity to play a critical part in building the app and new features.
  • U.S. work authorization with no visa sponsorship required.

Want to learn more? Take a look at our culture docs, including details on compensation, potential projects, and more.

About Otis At Otis, we turn aficionados into shareholders. We believe in transparency, liquidity, and trusting your own gut. We're democratizing an otherwise closed market and making alternative assets accessible. Invest in the things that you value, and whose value you understand, for as little as $25 and build a portfolio better suited to a museum than a stock ticker.

Our Culture We have a saying here: “we design our culture like we design the product.” Culture is the most important foundation for a successful company. A great culture provides the context for people to deliver their best work. Our goal is to find the fastest way to win. Our culture is designed to allow us to achieve this .

Transparent Compensation We don’t believe that better negotiators necessarily make better employees. Every employee can see their current salary, the salary levels for their team, and what each level’s salary increase would amount to in the future. This allows us to offer equal pay to all employees.

Otis is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a culture where diverse thoughts are welcomed and rewarded.

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description Square has grown into a platform of product services that help merchants run their business. From the inside, these product services are segmented into business units with their own product and engineering teams. Underneath, there's a platform organization that supports this plethora of products.

Our team, Square Console, is part of this larger platform organization. We work with platform teams to help expose functionality of their services via internally accessible browser-based tooling. We build tools for quick and easy deployment, service provisioning, secret management, database monitoring, user administration and so on. We use the latest and greatest technology stack: React.js, TypeScript, Webpack, Jest and styled-components. Our goal is to write well tested, maintainable and readable code that could be understood by engineers with no front-end experience with little effort.

If this sounds interesting, here are some of the tasks that you would work on as part of our team:

  • Develop, and deploy incremental improvements to our front-end platform.

  • Write reusable components and libraries.

  • Write and review engineering design documents and guide product design.

  • Work with many teams at Square.

  • Write clean, concise and well-tested code.

  • Work autonomously with no micromanagement or oversight.

Qualifications You have:

  • 2+ years of industry related experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of the front-end development process (JavaScript, DOM, CSS).

  • Troubleshooting skills through the entire stack, front-end to back-end.

  • Experience with React.js stack.

  • Good eye for UI and UX.

Technologies we use: TypeScript, React.js, Webpack, Antd, React Router, ESLint, Prettier, Jest, GraphQL, Styled Components, React Testing Library and many more.

Additional Information At Square, we value diversity and always treat all employees and job applicants based on merit, qualifications, competence, and talent. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Applicants in need of special assistance or accommodation during the interview process or in accessing our website may contact us by sending an email to assistance(at)squareup.com. Full Job Description

We are The Motley Fool, a purpose-driven financial services firm with nearly 30 years of expertise. Our goal is to make the world smarter, happier, and richer by providing outstanding business and investing advice, at scale. But what does that even mean?! It means we’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our investing services, like Stock Advisor, and Motley Fool Wealth Management, our portfolio management service.

What does this team do?

Our top-tier team of talented UI/UX designers work to make sure that our suite of premium product websites are responsive, accessible, and Foolish. Along with a team of frontend developers, you'll touch almost every part of the visual experience of our website, which operates at a huge scale of millions of users for Fool.com and over 750k subscribers for our premium sites. We are looking for people with solid hands-on work experience building beautiful, fast, and functional websites. You have a strong design eye, an ability to visually communicate ideas, and the technical chops to code up what you’ve envisioned

What would you do in this role?

As a UI/UX Designer you will be a driving creative force behind the design for Fool.com and related Fool Premium website experiences. You’ll use your keen design eye to create mockups and sharp technical chops to convert them to code. Our design system isn’t set in stone yet — this role will provide you with the exciting opportunity to be a part of shaping and building out our future design system and strategy.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Work with fellow designers to convert product ideas into low-fidelity wireframes for feedback and testing.
  • Leverage components in the pattern library and create high-fidelity mockups across different screen-sizes for further testing and development.
  • Convert design mockups to code that can integrate with the Fool.com or related Fool Premium website experiences.
  • Communicate the design decisions you’ve made, why you’ve made them, and ideally backing up those decisions with qualitative or quantitative data.
  • Translate designs in the Django code: pulling from GitHub, making HTML updates in the template, extending Bootstrap or adding new HTML and SCSS styles, adding interaction via JQuery, and deploying your changes to a feature branch.
  • Abstract reusable new design patterns and code components into shared items in Storybook and the Component Library.

We’d love to work with you if:

  • You design solutions: You hear the description of a user need or a product opportunity and can start sketching out how that could work. That you aren’t afraid to suggest approaches and then dive in to create them. You know when to go looking for input from others, and are constantly looking for ways to improve our user experience.
  • You are open to pivoting to solutions that better meet our user’s specific needs. You love getting user feedback and see it as a chance to enhance your designs so that they are more usable. You understand that user research can be a sort of visual editing that can help you learn, grow, and better serve our customers.
  • You pay attention to detail: Missed details erode consistency, makes users think, when we are aiming to build trust in our advice for how to invest their hard-earned savings. You actively pull in other team members to review your work and understand the value of thinking through each step in the user flow.
  • You love form and function. You know good design isn’t about bells and whistles. It’s about making a workable solution that meets the member’s needs.
  • You’re curious and love to learn: Whether it’s the latest technology, how the Foolish business operates, or an interest in investing for yourself (huge bonus!); you have an insatiable appetite for knowledge. And, you love to share, engage and collaborate with your teammates.

You take pride in your work: The thought of a customer being lost in a product you designed makes you cringe. Hearing criticism in a user test actually makes you grateful to make the tool even better. You want to ensure that every customer has a great experience with The Motley Fool because of what you build.

What do you need to apply?

  • At least one year of experience in UI design and web development outside of a coding bootcamp or college program.
  • Ability to build responsive and accessible web pages – HTML and CSS
  • Ability to write server-side CSS pre-processing platforms – SCSS
  • A clear understanding of UI design patterns, responsive web design, and web accessibility.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate with your peers.
  • Experience working on projects with multiple designers, developers, and stakeholders.
  • A desire to work with a fun, growing team of developers and design professionals.
  • A passion for or interest in investing - even better if you are familiar with the Fool's products or have been a subscriber to any of our sites!
  • If you have one, show us your online portfolio and share about the impact it has made. We look forward to seeing it!

It’s even better if you have…

  • Formal design training i.e. BA/BFA (or equivalent experience) in Visual *Communication, HCI or a related field is a plus.
  • Ability to work with front-end website frameworks – Bootstrap
  • Ability to work with a javascript environment - Vue.js
  • Ability to work in a Python environment - Django
  • Ability to work with image authoring tools – Sketch
  • Familiarity with the opportunities and limitations of web typography.
  • Familiarity with vector graphics and iconography.
  • Familiarity with code versioning tool – Git

The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. What’s the Experience? As an apprentice, you'll join with other apprentices in a local cohort. You'll go through your first few weeks together, learning about IBM and the skills you'll be attaining throughout your apprenticeship. Then, you'll work with your managers and mentors to progress through your personal skills roadmap, learning and demonstrating new knowledge and competencies through hands-on application with your project teams. You'll complete milestones along the way, earning digital credentials to validate your skills, and will come back together with other apprentices to participate in on-going training and development focused on your professional and technical skills.

We’re looking to expand our global team’s development standards and best practices, so we’re looking for someone who’s excited by driving quality code, reviews, testing (at all stages), and continuous integration and deployment.

  • You care about building enterprise-grade systems because you understand how our products meaningfully impact patients downstream
  • You have comfort with AWS cloud technologies and have a track record of learning new technologies and languages on the job

Software Engineer (Fullstack)

Before the dawn of everything internet, insurance was intimate and personal. You walked down the street to chat with your broker, and the risk to your business, your livelihood, was covered with a handshake. Today things are different. The average insurance policy for a mom-and-pop store trades through a dozen different hands and traverses a maze of systems and processes. Few are accountable and fewer know the whole story.

This is just a taste of the type of big problem we want you to solve. We seek a software engineer to help drive a digital product team on a mission to bring a new type of interaction to a market once exclusively driven by in-person relationships.

As a member of a cross-functional team of engineers, data scientists, designers, and product managers, you’ll provide input and have your voice heard on key product decisions, and the tools and resources to build and ship ideas quickly. You’ll be a part of a startup-like environment in a company with thousands of existing customers.

Who you are

Like Git? Great. Have a favorite data store? Front-end framework? Way of working? Propose it! We believe that a collaborative technology team focused on outcomes is capable of making rational decisions based on system-risk, ramp-up time and ease-of-use. Utility trumps novelty..

Some signs you might be ready:

You’re comfortable with ambiguity and you accept the challenge of figuring it out. You’re more than a coder; you’re someone who knows how to deliver. You want to work with a cross-functional team to design a solution as well as implement it. You put users first and actively seek user feedback. You build to learn. You understand the role of validation and its place in the product development process. You're deeply familiar with at least one programming language and its ecosystem, and you're comfortable learning others. You value repeatability and automation. Automated testing and infrastructure as code are a way of life. You're comfortable reading and debugging code written by others, and you write your own code to allow others to do the same. To that end, you appreciate the value of common standards. You can recognize common code smells, and you know how to address them. You understand design patterns and know when and how to apply them. You view security as a first-class concern. You can recognize common application vulnerabilities, and you know how to remediate them. You look forward to having your work reviewed...and reviewing the work of others. What you’ll own

Proposing tool chains, standards and practices. Write snappy code, from flexible JavaScript libraries to concise, reusable services. Work with the latest open-source projects designed to scale. Build components for products that create market-defining experiences. Creatively figure out how to use customer data to inform decision-making. Work with product managers, designers, and data scientists to translate research findings into features. Tools We Use

While we don't expect you to be an expert in all of our tools, the ideal candidate will be familiar with most on day one. Over your first few months, you'll become comfortable working with nearly all of them.

TypeScript/JavaScript, NodeJS, Python Trunk-based development, CI/CD, and test automation tools React, HTML, CSS REST, GraphQL, gRPC, JSON, Protobuf AWS - IAM, CloudFormation, S3, API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, ECS, VPC Git, GitHub, Jira Confluence, Markdown, UML Basic commands on UNIX and UNIX-like systems We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
