We build beautiful, lovingly engineered SaaS products for the hospitality industry. And we'd like you to join us.

What can you expect?

Your role will kick off with mastering our overall product architectures and APIs, shadowing other developers and learning the ropes. You’ll immediately drop into our sprint kick-offs and stand-ups so you have exposure to our processes and learn how we work and who we are.

Once you’ve found your feet and know your way around our products, you’ll start collaborating with the Product Development team to brainstorm solutions to engineering challenges.

You’ll help to modernise the codebase of our older product while taking full advantage of our newer PWA’s codebase to quickly prototype, iterate and release new features, working alongside other developers and creatives. Automated testing will be part of your game, and you’ll use your skills in unit and behavioural testing to help keep expanding our code coverage.

Bugs are bugs, and we’re not immune to them either. You’ll be quality-focussed, squashing the critical ones as they arise, assisting the customer success team with troubleshooting where necessary.

Who are you?

You’ll love writing code and deeply care about learning your craft as well as contributing to the success of our products. You’ll no doubt have some of your own personal and professional projects under your belt to show off your technical interests and proven track record, and probably be somewhat obsessed with writing readable, secure, accessible, testable, standards-compliant code.

Our engineering team generally works on web based applications, so you’ll need to be very familiar with HTML, CSS, MySQL, Javascript and PHP. Experience in NodeJS, Laravel, Vue.js or React would be useful too. You will also be very familiar with APIs, including REST, SOAP and GraphQL.

A graduate degree is not a necessity. We welcome applications from self-taught developers and graduates alike.

We are very open to flexible and remote working, so if you’re interested but not able to work in the office everyday, you can work remotely instead and we can meet up now and again for some team contact days (for this reason, we’d prefer if you were somewhere in the UK).

We’re building new ways to interact with WordPress. They’re simple, fast, and highly usable. They’re written in the latest web technologies and are used by millions of people. We want your help to expand our reach and keep our approach fresh.

Software Engineer

Here at Appointedd, we’re on a mission to be recognised as the best online booking system in the world by enabling anything, or anyone, to be booked (or requested) in as little as two taps! We’d love to hear from engineers who would be interested in helping us achieve our goals! 🌎

Who are we?

Appointedd was born in 2011 when our founder and CEO, Leah, then a busy magazine editor, found herself unable to book an appointment with her hairdressers (and who hasn’t been there?) She saw a gap in the market for an easy online booking system. From that idea, Appointedd has grown into an industry-leading product, powering everything from small hairdressers to multi-national household names, and supported by a team of 18+ ambitious, talented people in a lovely Edinburgh office overlooking the iconic Castle.

Our engineers come from a diverse variety of backgrounds, with several without a Computer Science background; one of the team has a degree in Biological Sciences, and another a degree in Chemistry with a background in teaching. As long as you have a passion for building great software, we’re happy to have you. 🙌

What do we use?

  • Node.js and modern Javascript (ES6+) to power our back-end application code.
  • MongoDB for most of our persistent data storage.
  • AWS for all of our infrastructure. Our older services are hosted on Elastic Beanstalk with our newer services moving towards a serverless architecture using API Gateways and Lambdas.
  • Classic AngularJS for our front-end application code.
  • PHP 7.1 for our legacy back-end application code.
  • Git for our version control.
  • GitHub for our source code hosting and pull request management.
  • Prettier, ESLint, and EditorConfig for automatic code styling and quality control.
  • Codeship for our continuous integration/deployment pipeline.
  • Clubhouse for our issue tracking and project management.
  • Slack for our communications.
  • We have no enforced code editor so you’re welcome to use whatever you feel the most productive in. We have a range of editor users in the team with VSCode, Vim, and Emacs being the main examples.

What will you be doing?

As part of the product team you’ll be responsible for turning concepts and designs for features into reality! 🚀

This is an exciting time to join us as we’re in the growth stage of our journey! You’ll get the opportunity to help us scale our engineering processes, contribute to transitioning our legacy monolith into modern services, and develop brand new functionality.

We’re a fast-paced and growing startup, so you’re likely to be doing a variety of tasks as part of your sprints. From doing feature work to stomping bugs, it’s unlikely any two days at Appointedd will be the same! Since we’re a small (but growing) engineering team, you’ll have the opportunity to work on both the front-end and back-end of our product as well as be involved with our infrastructure.

Why should you apply?

  • You’re interested in building the world’s best online booking system! ✨
  • You like being given full ownership of your workload whilst being backed by a supportive team.
  • You enjoy learning about existing and new technologies, and how to effectively use them.
  • You care about writing high quality and well-tested code.
  • You care deeply about user experience and satisfaction.
  • You want to be empowered to explore and experiment in a supportive environment.
  • You’re interested in being a part of a company that values personal and professional development. Your manager will have a technical background that can support you through regular one-to-ones and mentorship.
  • You want to hang out with a cool team, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and snacks provided, every Friday for our weekly show and tell. (Who can say no to that!?) 🍻
  • You want a free roll for breakfast every Friday. 🤤

This all sounds great! How do I apply? If all of the above has given you the urge to fire an application over to us, great! Please send us your CV and a covering letter to jobs@appointedd.com, making sure you explain a bit about why you want to work with us and what you think you can bring to the team.

If your CV is accepted, our interview process normally consists of the following steps:

💻 A small, take home, no time-limit Javascript programming challenge.

📞 A 15-20 minute phone interview.

🏢 A pair of on-site interviews that should last around 2-3 hours in total.

If you’d like to learn more about how our product works you can sign up for a free trial here!

Unfortunately we’re not currently accepting remote applicants so we’ll only be considering those who are currently based within commuting distance of Edinburgh or are willing to relocate.

No recruitment agencies please.

Angaza creates software for selling life-changing products in underserved markets. When a family in Tanzania (or Kenya, or Nigeria, or India…) pays a weekly installment on their new home solar installation, their payment is processed by Angaza backend software. When they have a question about their account, a call center finds the answer using an Angaza web application. Their lives were changed when they could turn on electricity for the first time, and the business that made it possible used Angaza software to do so: to register their purchase, to set up their installation, and to stay in touch while they start to benefit from it. Plenty of other “B2B SaaS” companies build software designed for mature industries and well-served markets. Angaza instead designs technology that works better for people and places that are often the edge cases for other software companies. They are, however, our core users, and we believe they’ll use our software to dramatically improve the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people over the next decade.

This Position

As a member of the Business Foundations team, you will provide tools and services that enrich the lives of countless people around the world. Your team’s charter is to manage the data access, security, and revenue flow of Angaza’s customers, and you will deploy improvements as often as daily. You’ll learn from us how we maintain a high level of service with a high-quality code base, and we’ll learn from you how we can make them even better. You’ll write a lot of Python, much of it invoking the SQLAlchemy and Flask frameworks. You’ll be encouraged to span the gamut of software responsibilities, from managing operations in our AWS-based stack to thinking hard about high-level architecture. You’ll earn considerable freedom of approach, ownership of results, and bi-weekly celebrations of what you’ve accomplished. You’ll receive weekly investment in your career growth from senior engineers and in turn be invited to mentor colleagues where you have knowledge. Every engineering role includes opportunities to lead and obligations to serve. At Angaza we support diversity of thought, experience, and background, and seek to welcome new perspectives and skills to the team. Candidates from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are warmly encouraged to apply.

Should You Reach Out?

  • You should have 4+ years of professional experience writing software. Beyond that, experience in any of the following areas (listed in rough order of how regularly you’ll draw on them) will be directly relevant to your work here:
  • Python (we use SQLAlchemy and Flask heavily)
  • Postgres (SQL and management)
  • REST API design and implementation
  • Implementation of testable complex business logic
  • Performance and scaling of three-tier applications

Next Step This position is full-time and on-site in our San Francisco office. Send us your contact details and résumé. Feel free to attach any extra information you think we should know. We look at every single person. We’ll get back to you shortly.

Other Details Angaza is a for-profit company with offices in San Francisco and Nairobi. Our global technical team is more than two dozen people. We’ve worked at places like Kiva, Canonical, Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Mozilla. We strive to be thoughtful, pragmatic, and collaborative. Our hiring process typically involves a phone conversation, a small and well-defined home project, and an on-site interview. We don’t believe in gotcha logic puzzles or adversarial whiteboard exercises, and we give you specific constructive feedback wherever possible.

Employees receive salary, an equity stake in Angaza, and benefits that include:

  • Medical, life, and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Your transit or bike commute expenses paid by Angaza
  • Parental leave at 100% salary
  • Flexible time off
  • Free snacks and drinks

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a full-stack engineer to build new kinds of editorial tools and projects. You will be a part of the Journal’s R&D Lab and will work collaboratively across the organization to deploy novel newsroom products.

The R&D Lab is a part of the Journal’s Strategy department, which features the full range of journalistic talent—print, video, and graphics journalists, editors, product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists, artificial intelligence experts, and more. The R&D Lab uses data science, machine learning, and other forms of computational journalism to report stories and support other journalists across the Journal. We are a lively, close-knit community that works collaboratively to create new kinds of journalism and present it in exciting ways. This role will require both journalistic instincts and engineering skills, so the ideal candidate will be passionate about growing in both of these areas.

Responsibilities

Turn research ideas into production tools that help the Journal break news and create new kinds of journalism.

Help acquire, clean, and store datasets both large and small.

Build and maintain ML- and NLP-backed dashboards that help editors and journalists find insights in otherwise opaque, unstructured data.

Create feedback mechanisms for readers, journalists, and editors to help train next-generation ML models.

Create new ways to find and present data to technical and non-technical audiences.

Build prototypes quickly, and then turn those prototypes into reusable, scalable applications.

Communicate your technical work to colleagues from different desks and bureaus, including non-technical colleagues.

You tell us: what are some exciting computational journalism projects that you want to work on?

Requirements

A minimum of three years of related work experience. If you didn’t work in or adjacent to media, then you should have a demonstrable passion for news.

Expertise in Git, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (both in a browser and on a server). Python is not required, but if you don’t know it already, then you will need a willingness to learn new languages.

Experience with Express.js and React.

Experience building APIs and web services.

Some familiarity with using SQL and designing databases.

If you have cloud services and infrastructure experience, that’s a plus. If you don’t have this, then you should have a demonstrable ability to learn new workflows quickly.

The ability to juggle many tasks and work independently and efficiently. While we often work collaboratively, we’re a small team that has to keep up with the news, so the ideal candidate will know how to work and problem-solve quickly and autonomously.

Essential: the ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds.

We value quick learners, scrappy attitudes, and people who are passionate about making great journalism.

Our hiring process

We believe three things are important in a hiring process: what we ask you to do during an interview will be as close as possible to what we would ask you to do as part of your job; to provide you with open, honest feedback throughout the process; and to be respectful of your time. As such, our process is:

  • We'll have an initial 30 minute phone call where we'll talk a little about Permutive and the role we're hiring for and you'll talk about yourself, your experience and technology.
  • A one hour interview with our Lead Solutions Architect to go into more details around your experience and skills. We'll discuss specific examples of how you worked with customers and colleagues, what technologies you've used and what your ambitions are.
  • We'll provide you with a take-home technology challenge, and give you a week to complete it. We expect the challenge to take 2-4 hours for most people.
  • Finally there will be a round of on-site interviews: You'll spend 1 hour with our Head of Customer Success talking about how you work with customers and your colleagues. You'll also meet someone from our New York team to give you a wider context of Permutive, but also to understand how you'll culturally fit into our company. You'll meet our founders, and have the opportunity to ask them any questions you have about Permutive, and talk more broadly about our technology and our vision. 45 mins with our Lead Solutions Architect to discuss your response to the coding challenge and to discuss any open questions you might have. At this point, if it's appropriate, we'll make an offer Benefits
