Agile and fast-paced work environment Small team so big impact and we give large amounts of responsibility and autonomy

We work with cutting edge web technologies, so we are all continuously learning new things and pushing the limits. We have multiple applications, so you won’t be tied to one codebase and we are continually doing new and interesting work

There is lots of opportunity for ownership, as well as for mentoring and being mentored

Benefits you get:

Free gym membership, pension contribution, 30 days of holiday, free fruit in the office, cool new office, standing desks and free (good) coffee.

Interested in joining us?

We have a task that we’d like you to do, to show us how great you are. It shouldn’t take you long, so hopefully it won’t be much for you to pull something together – it will give us something to talk about when we get you in.

Once you’ve submitted your task we’ll get you in for a chat. We don’t do code tests or anything like that, our interview process is mainly to check that you’ll be a good fit with the team.

Our task

A wind turbine has 100 items on it, each get inspected. Write an application that outputs numbers from 1 to 100, but for multiples of three print “Coating Damage” instead of the number and for the multiples of five print “Lightning Strike” instead of the number. For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print "Coating Damage and Lightning Strike" instead of the number.

The code to generate the output should be done in PHP (without using any frameworks) and the output should be rendered in HTML with a nice user experience. Share the code to us and show us what you can do.

Extra kudos for:

  1. A nice UI that makes the most of the output
  2. Pulling the inspection data down in an Ajax call and processing the results in the browser 3. Putting the code in GitHub for us to see
  3. Getting it to run on a free AWS instance
  4. Sharing your plan and approach (any notes you made before coding started)
  5. Any future plans for how the application could be improved

Backend engineers build the core of Stripe products, services and APIs in spectacularly robust fashion. Connect builds infrastructure for marketplaces and platforms to incorporate payments into their products. It was launched nearly six years ago, and today it is Stripe’s most successful and differentiated product, used by startups and leading global technology companies, alike. It derives its name from creating connections between Stripe accounts and allowing funds flows between them. We have backend engineers in almost every team across Stripe, and in that role, you’ll be making some of the most significant decisions for the company. You’ll get to work with other engineers to build delightful features that span various parts of the system, as well as our business, sales and operations teams to understand and solve our users’ pain points.

You will:

  • Design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and systems across Stripe’s engineering teams
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large-scale
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes
  • You may be fit for this role if you:
  • Enjoy and have experience building APIs
  • Think about systems and services and write high quality code. We work mostly in Ruby, with some Scala and Go. However, languages can be learned: we care much more about your general engineering skill than knowledge of a particular language or framework.
  • Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems
  • Take pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different expertise (for example, ¼ of Stripes work in a country that’s different from the one they grew up in). Almost every role at Stripe collaborates with some engineers, from Sales and Support in sharing feedback from our customers; to Legal and Accounting in supporting our systems for tracking money movement and reporting around the world. It’s not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas. For instance, we have wonderful team members who are really focused on their customers’ needs and building amazing user experiences, but didn’t work on APIs before joining Stripe.

You might work on:

  • Build a new API for our users, or iterate on existing APIs
  • Launch a new market or payment method
  • Work with our Analytics and Fraud teams to reduce chargebacks and declines
  • Build new tools for our business teams
  • Build new systems to securely store sensitive data
  • What’s it like to work at Stripe?

Stripe is helping the internet fulfill its potential as a platform for economic progress by building software tools that accelerate global economic access and technological development. Stripe makes it easy to start, run and scale an internet business from anywhere in the world. Stripe is, at its heart, an engineering company. To provide a missing pillar of core internet infrastructure, we hire people with a broad set of technical skills (and from a wide variety of backgrounds) who are ready to take on some of the most challenging problems in the industry – from reliably handling 100M API requests per day, to building adaptive machine learning as a result of years of data science and infrastructure work, and enabling entrepreneurs worldwide to start a global internet business.

We look at Stripe as a constant work in progress and the same is true of our people; for all of us, we believe the best is yet to come. We’re here to support each other in our curiosity and creativity – which we pursue through thoughtful discussion and knowledge-sharing among a diverse set of peers and colleagues. We encourage all engineers to transition teams once every year and a half and also take on short-term projects with other teams across Stripe. This enables engineers to learn how different parts of Stripe work while also establishing stronger ties and cross-pollination between groups. We contribute to existing open-source projects and the people working on them, and we release several tools as open-source. We want to work in a company of warm, inclusive people who treat their colleagues exceptionally well. The kind of people who are committed to going out of their way to help other Stripes in the short-term and pushing them to improve over the long-term (by helping them to get better at what they do). We’re a highly cross-functional organization and view that as part of the fun: we design our space to encourage as much collaboration as possible. We have long tables in the kitchen for a reason (to enable everyone to meet new people and learn from them). We also have a culture of transparency that we carry through to email communication, ensuring that Stripes all around the world have the information they need to make good local decisions. In both our products and our people, we aim to reflect, represent and advocate for all of our users, globally. Our users transcend geography, culture and language; what we share, collectively, is a drive to create a fairer, more economically interconnected world.

Company Description

When we launched the little white reader, we invented mobile, ubiquitous payments and enabled anyone to start, run, and grow a business. Ten years and billions of transactions later we’re reimagining commerce for businesses of all types and sizes—we’re enabling the independent electrician to send invoices, helping the beauty salon pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Square’s rapidly growing financing platform, Square Capital, has revolutionized the way businesses and consumers obtain the funding needed to achieve their goals.

Unlike traditional business financing products, Square Capital offers are extended to pre-qualified sellers with no application process, funds are deposited as soon as the next business day, and repayment happens as a fixed percentage of daily card sales. Since the product launched in 2014, Square Capital has extended more than $4.5 billion to over a hundred thousand sellers.

With Square Installments, we’re empowering sellers to offer monthly installment plans, so that their customers can access goods and services they value, but can not or do not want to pay in full up front. This makes goods and services more affordable for buyers, and helps small businesses grow with a tool that has been historically reserved for large companies. Our team strives to provide simple, elegant, and reliable financing experiences for small business owners and their customers.

As a software engineer on Square Capital, you will be responsible for designing, building, and owning the services and infrastructure that power our products. You will build beautiful web applications, sophisticated financial systems, and highly available services that form complex distributed systems. If you love delivering beautiful software that improves the lives of millions of consumers and business owners, we want to work with you!

You will:

  • Work closely with engineering, product, and design partners to design and build new cutting-edge financial services products
  • Massively scale our existing lending platform, from the data stores to the distributed coordination mechanisms depending on them
  • Implement sophisticated credit underwriting models that integrate the best third-party sources with Square’s proprietary transaction data
  • Build systems that collect and maintain customers’ sensitive data, while holding Square to the highest standards for security and compliance
  • Design fault tolerant systems so the team can be brave and move fast, without ever negatively impacting our customers

You have:

  • Interest in working full-stack, from optimizing database transactions to building distributed systems and frontend web applications.
  • Passion for building products that are beautiful outside and inside – from their user experience to their robust and elegant design.
  • Strong software development skills and computer science fundamentals.

Job description

As an Engineer at Lumanu, you will build technology that combines the best of creative marketing and programmatic advertising. We are ambitious, engaged, and excited about building a revolutionary marketing platform that truly understands what makes content good, how to find the best talent to create more good content, and how to get that good content to consumers as effectively as possible.

We're looking for fantastic engineers who can work harder, faster, and smarter without sacrificing technical excellence. Our challenges are unique, and we are rapidly revolutionizing an enormous industry, so you should be excited to build systems that will impact how companies communicate with consumers all over the world. If you're just embarking on your journey as a software engineer and want to work hand-in-hand with senior engineers to develop and deploy a product used by marketers all over the world, we would love to hear from you!

Join us and you will

  • Be instrumental in building core parts of our platform
  • Work in a powerful cutting edge technology stack
  • Help guide the direction of our product and company
  • Have a significant ownership stake in the company
  • Become an engineering leader as we grow our product team

What you’ll need to be successful at Lumanu

  • Fast learner: We're looking for engineers who thrive on learning new technologies and want to build something that will be used by many. You should be able to adapt easily to meet the needs of our massive growth and rapidly evolving business environment.

  • Attention-to-Detail: You strive to prove that speed and quality are not conflicting; you can achieve both at the same time.

  • Passion: You feel ownership over everything you build. You crave knowledge and want to get better at building products that users find value and joy in using.

  • Team player: You believe that you can achieve more on a team than you ever could alone. You rely and thrive on others' candid feedback for continuous improvement. ‍

  • Deep expertise in Clojure or ClojureScript

  • Expertise in one or more aspects of enterprise software architecture including caching, concurrency, database architecture, message queues

  • Expertise with deployment, monitoring, and testing of large scale applications involving multiple services

Remote Software Engineer

Exciting times! At Vavato we are building a development team from scratch to further the development of our auction platform, initially built by a 3rd party agency.

You will join our brand new IT department and team, have a high degree of responsibility and freedom to execute your job, and high impact on a rocket ship growth organization.

Work hard, play hard! At Vavato you will find a relaxed, casual atmosphere (and occasionally see post it blocks flying down the hallway in an attempt to punish a bad joke). We are young in spirit and lighthearted, but work hard to reach our goals.

We expect everyone to take initiative and point out things we could be doing better or could do to improve the #HAPPYVAVATO experience for our buyers and sellers. Our trio of CEO's is always happy to listen to your concerns and implement the best ideas. Together we are smarter and stronger.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals willing to be part of a growing start-up / scale-up adventure. We expect you to take full ownership of your work, work hard, especially when needed - production issues can occur and have to be tackled, issues arise daily that require immediate attention to avoid hurting the company's bottom line. We try to structure work as best as we can, but sometimes you will have to cope with chaos.

We expect you to help carry the load and the company forward. There is plenty of room for learning and growth in our team, and we're just starting out. The intention is to make this company 10x bigger than it is today. Plenty of opportunities will be available down the road for people who are willing and capable.

We also expect you to have fun, love your job, love our customers, and enjoy the company of your colleagues ;)

Practices / Values

  • We deploy multiple times a day to production with zero downtime using Continuous Delivery
  • We follow the open source model with our CTO being the benevolent dictator on the product and everyone contributing through pull requests
  • We believe in the values of Software Craftsmanship and do things "the right way", even under pressure.
  • We work directly with the stakeholders within the company without any proxy between the people who need a feature and the people working on it
  • We do unit testing, integration testing, black box testing and testing spanning the whole stack. * This way you know that code that hits master is production ready.
  • We use Kanban and release features as they become ready, without ever doing big bang releases and without creating "a release".
  • All of your code will be reviewed by a peer before being put into production to accelerate your learning and for your own ease of mind
  • Everything in our infrastructure is scripted either through Terraform or Ansible to ensure reproducible builds and to be disaster proof
  • We have hourly full backups of the database in case anything goes wrong
  • We have tested our disaster recovery plan extensively
  • We use trunk-based development, our branches are very short lived, and we employ feature toggles to ship code to production as early as possible without making it visible to users

We don't expect you to know everything in the list, but the more the merrier. In the end, what really counts is your willingness to learn and capacity to solve problems in an efficient and simple way. If you're excited to learn any of those, we're happy to sponsor you!

Angaza creates software for selling life-changing products in underserved markets. When a family in Tanzania (or Kenya, or Nigeria, or India…) pays a weekly installment on their new home solar installation, their payment is processed by Angaza backend software. When they have a question about their account, a call center finds the answer using an Angaza web application. Their lives were changed when they could turn on electricity for the first time, and the business that made it possible used Angaza software to do so: to register their purchase, to set up their installation, and to stay in touch while they start to benefit from it. Plenty of other “B2B SaaS” companies build software designed for mature industries and well-served markets. Angaza instead designs technology that works better for people and places that are often the edge cases for other software companies. They are, however, our core users, and we believe they’ll use our software to dramatically improve the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people over the next decade.

This Position

As a member of the Business Foundations team, you will provide tools and services that enrich the lives of countless people around the world. Your team’s charter is to manage the data access, security, and revenue flow of Angaza’s customers, and you will deploy improvements as often as daily. You’ll learn from us how we maintain a high level of service with a high-quality code base, and we’ll learn from you how we can make them even better. You’ll write a lot of Python, much of it invoking the SQLAlchemy and Flask frameworks. You’ll be encouraged to span the gamut of software responsibilities, from managing operations in our AWS-based stack to thinking hard about high-level architecture. You’ll earn considerable freedom of approach, ownership of results, and bi-weekly celebrations of what you’ve accomplished. You’ll receive weekly investment in your career growth from senior engineers and in turn be invited to mentor colleagues where you have knowledge. Every engineering role includes opportunities to lead and obligations to serve. At Angaza we support diversity of thought, experience, and background, and seek to welcome new perspectives and skills to the team. Candidates from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are warmly encouraged to apply.

Should You Reach Out?

  • You should have 4+ years of professional experience writing software. Beyond that, experience in any of the following areas (listed in rough order of how regularly you’ll draw on them) will be directly relevant to your work here:
  • Python (we use SQLAlchemy and Flask heavily)
  • Postgres (SQL and management)
  • REST API design and implementation
  • Implementation of testable complex business logic
  • Performance and scaling of three-tier applications

Next Step This position is full-time and on-site in our San Francisco office. Send us your contact details and résumé. Feel free to attach any extra information you think we should know. We look at every single person. We’ll get back to you shortly.

Other Details Angaza is a for-profit company with offices in San Francisco and Nairobi. Our global technical team is more than two dozen people. We’ve worked at places like Kiva, Canonical, Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Mozilla. We strive to be thoughtful, pragmatic, and collaborative. Our hiring process typically involves a phone conversation, a small and well-defined home project, and an on-site interview. We don’t believe in gotcha logic puzzles or adversarial whiteboard exercises, and we give you specific constructive feedback wherever possible.

Employees receive salary, an equity stake in Angaza, and benefits that include:

  • Medical, life, and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Your transit or bike commute expenses paid by Angaza
  • Parental leave at 100% salary
