What’s the Experience? As an apprentice, you'll join with other apprentices in a local cohort. You'll go through your first few weeks together, learning about IBM and the skills you'll be attaining throughout your apprenticeship. Then, you'll work with your managers and mentors to progress through your personal skills roadmap, learning and demonstrating new knowledge and competencies through hands-on application with your project teams. You'll complete milestones along the way, earning digital credentials to validate your skills, and will come back together with other apprentices to participate in on-going training and development focused on your professional and technical skills.

We’re looking for a Front End Engineer

You will become proficient with our domain by learning from your team and the wider business to understand the mortgage market and the technology that underpins how we set people free from the hell of mortgages. You will help shape the product and the work you and your teammates will deliver by working alongside your stakeholders and our engineering leads.

Our engineers work in cross-functional teams typically comprising 7 to 8 people including product owners, designers and contributors who are empowered to meet their goals. We seek to give all our crews the resources and support they need with a minimum of constraints.

You have a delivery focussed mindset and make use of agile software development practices to ensure your crew’s success. We value collaboration, repeatability and continuous improvement.

We look for people who love to learn new things whilst using their existing skills and experience to enrich the engineering team.

More about what you’ll do:

• Contributing to the continued development of our codebase using a broad range of technologies across our front-end stack by writing well formed and properly documented code. • Championing front-end development and helping to drive best practices and evolution of our front-end architecture. • Adding to our culture of automated testing and specification. • Collaborating with your crew’s stakeholders and product managers to help shape the work that the crew undertakes. • Having a keen eye for design and usability; working with our design and product teams to build best-in-class front-end experiences. • Keeping concerns such as accessibility, responsiveness and performance at the forefront of our product development, ensuring that we build products that are a pleasure to use for everyone, everywhere. • Working closely with non-technical crew members to focus on building systems that directly serve our customers and to ensure we are always building better things. • Helping the team to operate effectively by breaking problems down into simpler and faster to build components.

We use lots of exciting technology

We value well architected solutions with reliable and maintainable code using the right software engineering principles above all else. Our engineers want to deliver the best possible solution they can and you will play a key role in ensuring our continued success in doing so.

We put data at the heart of our product development process. User research results, data science models and A/B tests inform our decisions and help us prioritise product iterations. We follow a user-centered approach to solving design problems, focusing on usability and accessibility to meet our customers needs.

We’re big believers in using the right tools for the job to build the best software. Right now we mainly make use of functional programming and tenets commonly associated with it but are always evaluating our tools.

Our existing systems make heavy use of Typescript, PureScript, React, HTML, CSS-in-JS, Gatsby, Cypress, and Webpack, as well as Haskell and PostgreSQL. We deploy and operate our software using Docker and Kubernetes in AWS.

We believe in learning and development

Our engineers come from a number of backgrounds. We have self-taught team members working with graduates from universities and bootcamps alike. Some of us have worked in large corporations while some of us have only ever known startups. A portion of the team consistently enjoy full-stack work, others prefer to specialise in certain areas. While your role and team might see you targeting certain areas of work, we see this only as a specialism. You can expect to be exposed to many other parts of our codebase and to learn about and participate in its development while growing your own skills and supporting the growth of other engineers in your crew. From regular talks and reading groups to sponsored meet-ups and conference attendance, we want to help take our engineers to the next level. The benefits

This means that candidates for the Software Engineer role cannot negotiate Quorum’s base salary offer.

Here’s our promise to you:

We will not ask you what you are currently earning. We will consider years of relevant experience, relevant professional certifications/education, and performance expectations in setting what we believe is a competitive, fair base salary offer. We will be transparent about our compensation structure (see above) so that all candidates have equal access to compensation information and can make an informed decision about whether or not Quorum is the right workplace for them. If you are interested in learning more about how negotiation impacts pay equity and/or why other start-ups have decided to implement a “No Negotiation” policy of some type, here are a few resources: Project Include, AAUW, Ministry for Women, Magoosh.

Note: Quorum does not endorse or verify any of the information provided in the resources on the impact of negotiation on pay equity. We provide these resources simply to increase awareness of a topic we believe is important for both employers and candidates to consider.

Our weekly Product Sync/Planning, where we revisit what we’re currently working on and what we plan to do in the upcoming week(s). Other than that, we do a company-wide virtual-coffee session every morning. Anyone who is interested and available can join this call. The only rule is, that we don’t talk about work. It is an opportunity to laugh at what our dogs do to our shoes, share our first (or third?) coffee with each other and just try to kick-off the day in a great mood.

We do daily, written check-ins in Slack to keep everyone in the loop on what we’re working on.

👨‍👨‍👧‍👦 Quarterly Get-together

We are a remote-first company. At the same time, we value the face-to-face time. That’s why we get together at the same place at the beginning of each quarter. We spend the time strategizing, planning as well as just talking, having fun and getting to know each other better.

To date we have always done this in Frankfurt, Germany, where we have one of our offices. That’s why we sometimes call the time that we get together, on-sites.

🎹 Processes & Tools

Our main tool for coordinating our day-to-day work is Gitlab. We not only use it as central git host, but also for our complete CI pipeline, to trigger and execute deployments with it and track our work items (and bugs 🐛) with Gitlab boards.

Developers own the development of their improvements and features and guide them until they are in production. And while some parts of the application are worked on mostly by a smaller subset of the team, we practice shared code ownership.

We practice a branch-based development workflow and do code reviews via merge requests (Gitlab-speak for pull requests). To enable quick feedback-cycles we aim for short-lived branches and provide automated means to deploy every branch to their own environment.

We put a strong emphasis on automated testing and having a test coverage that follows the testing pyramid. And as with most things, we aim to get better at these practices, which means we’re not perfect. 😇

When it comes to tools, such as an IDE or editor, you are free to use whatever you prefer. We provide JetBrains licenses, in case you like to use their tools. And of course, you’re free to choose your computer hardware and operating system.

👩‍🚀 Organisational Model

At BRYTER we believe in the power of self-organizing teams and that everyone can be a leader. Everyone can participate in shaping the way we work at BRYTER, based on their interests and capabilities.

To that end we work hard to make the way we work explicit, to enable us to improve it continuously. Anybody on the team can propose changes and improvements in the form of a proposal, and proposals are by default accepted. Only if by getting feedback on a proposal a serious risk or harm for the organisation is identified, we ask the authors of a proposal to adapt it, usually with the help of the people who identified the risks.

Advantages of working at BRYTER

🗺 Location/Travel

Being a distributed team, you can work from wherever you want. The whole company gets together every quarter for a 2-day company get together. Depending on where you’re based and the location of the company on-site, you might get to travel for a few days each quarter.

👩🏻‍💻 Flexible working hours

We know life comes with responsibilities and the occasional, unexpected occurrences, and encourage everyone at BRYTER to spend time on people and the things they care about. That’s why working hours at BRYTER are usually as flexible as you need them to be.

💪🏽 Professional and Personal Growth

We cover up to 5 days of training or conferences per year, including travel and entrance fee. Additionally, BRYTER covers all costs for books and online courses, based on a fair-use-policy. And all that without lengthy, complicated processes or approvals. We trust you!

Machine Learning Engineer, Verifications Platform

Help build the platform that empowers Stripe to launch new international markets and new products with ease.

As a platform company powering businesses all over the world, Stripe processes payments, runs marketplaces, detects fraud, helps entrepreneurs start an internet business from anywhere in the world, builds world-class developer-friendly APIs, and more. Our mission is to enable well-intentioned persons and legal entities to engage with the financial ecosystem with ease, regardless of geography. Stripe has a fantastic set of data.

The Merchant Intelligence group is responsible for using this data to build a deep understanding of the businesses that use us, which is a priority both to protect Stripe and also to optimize our products. We work across the technical stack: from machine learning over our users’ data to integrating into Stripe’s products to building new products for our users.

Removing barriers to online commerce is at the heart of Stripe’s mission, and doing so requires effectively and efficiently protecting the businesses that trust Stripe at scale. Machine learning engineers in Merchant Intelligence are responsible for the mission-critical work of building and deploying the models that help Stripe enable access to economic infrastructure for a huge variety of businesses across the globe.

You will work on:

  • Design, train, and deploy improved models that verify identities of persons and legal entities that wish to onboard to the Stripe platform
  • Design text classification systems using deep learning techniques to better understand identification flows
  • Imagine new feature ideas and design real-time data pipelines to incorporate them into our models
  • Improve the way we evaluate and monitor our model and system performance
  • Collaborate with our machine learning infrastructure team to build support for new model types into our scoring infrastructure
  • Supporting production scoring models for identity verification including model improvements, training, and deployment.
  • Working with product teams and ML modeling engineers to deploy, develop and maintain production ML models.
  • Owning, augmenting and evolving central datasets to enable new products powered by ML.
  • Becoming an expert in Tensorflow, Kubernetes, Spark and other technologies that make up parts of our production ML stack.

You may be fit for this role if you:

  • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different expertise (for example, ¼ of Stripes work in a country that’s different from the one they grew up in). Almost every role at Stripe collaborates with some engineers, from Sales and Support in sharing feedback from our customers; to Legal and Accounting in supporting our systems for tracking money movement and reporting around the world.
  • Enjoy and have experience in Machine Learning
  • Think about systems and services and write high quality code.
  • Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems
  • Take pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Have a strong engineering background and experience in machine learning or data infrastructure. You’ll be writing production Scala and Python code.
  • Experience with Model training and inference in production and at scale. Image based datasets, pipelines, and neural networks is a plus.
  • Optimizing the end-to-end performance of distributed systems.
  • Developing and maintaining distributed systems built with open source tools.
  • Writing and debugging ETL jobs using a distributed data framework (Spark, Kafka, Flink).

It’s not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas. For instance, we have wonderful team members who are really focused on their customers’ needs and building amazing user experiences, but didn’t work on APIs before joining Stripe.

What’s it like to work at Stripe?

Stripe is helping the internet fulfill its potential as a platform for economic progress by building software tools that accelerate global economic access and technological development. Stripe makes it easy to start, run and scale an internet business from anywhere in the world. Stripe is, at its heart, an engineering company. To provide a missing pillar of core internet infrastructure, we hire people with a broad set of technical skills (and from a wide variety of backgrounds) who are ready to take on some of the most challenging problems in the industry – from reliably handling 100M API requests per day, to building adaptive machine learning as a result of years of data science and infrastructure work, and enabling entrepreneurs worldwide to start a global internet business.

We look at Stripe as a constant work in progress and the same is true of our people; for all of us, we believe the best is yet to come. We’re here to support each other in our curiosity and creativity – which we pursue through thoughtful discussion and knowledge-sharing among a diverse set of peers and colleagues.

We encourage all engineers to transition teams once every year and a half and also take on short-term projects with other teams across Stripe. This enables engineers to learn how different parts of Stripe work while also establishing stronger ties and cross-pollination between groups. We contribute to existing open-source projects and the people working on them, and we release several tools as open-source.

We want to work in a company of warm, inclusive people who treat their colleagues exceptionally well. The kind of people who are committed to going out of their way to help other Stripes in the short-term and pushing them to improve over the long-term (by helping them to get better at what they do).

We’re a highly cross-functional organization and view that as part of the fun: we design our space to encourage as much collaboration as possible. We have long tables in the kitchen for a reason (to enable everyone to meet new people and learn from them). We also have a culture of transparency that we carry through to email communication, ensuring that Stripes all around the world have the information they need to make good local decisions.

In both our products and our people, we aim to reflect, represent and advocate for all of our users, globally. Our users transcend geography, culture and language; what we share, collectively, is a drive to create a fairer, more economically interconnected world.

Backend engineers build the core of Stripe products, services and APIs in spectacularly robust fashion. As a platform company powering businesses all over the world, Stripe processes payments, runs marketplaces, detects fraud, helps entrepreneurs start an internet business from anywhere in the world, builds world-class developer-friendly APIs, and more. Stripe’s backend engineers work on the business logic for all of that. As a backend engineer, you will build and expand APIs and services and work with our partners to launch new markets, payment methods, and capabilities. We have backend engineers in almost every team across Stripe, and in that role, you’ll be making some of the most significant decisions for the company. You’ll get to work with other engineers to build delightful features that span various parts of the system, as well as our business, sales and operations teams to understand and solve our users’ pain points.

We’re looking for people with a strong background or interest in building successful products or systems; you’re comfortable in dealing with lots of moving pieces; you have exquisite attention to detail; and you’re comfortable learning new technologies and systems.

You will:

  • Design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and systems across Stripe’s engineering teams
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large-scale
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes

You may be fit for this role if you:

  • Enjoy and have experience building APIs
  • Think about systems and services and write high quality code. We work mostly in Ruby, with some Scala and Go. However, languages can be learned: we care much more about your general engineering skill than knowledge of a particular language or framework.
  • Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems
  • Take pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different expertise (for example, ¼ of Stripes work in a country that’s different from the one they grew up in). It’s not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas. For instance, we have wonderful team members who are really focused on their customers’ needs and building amazing user experiences, but didn’t work on APIs before joining Stripe.

You might work on:

  • Building a new API for our users, or iterating on existing APIs
  • Launching a new market or payment method
  • With our Analytics and Fraud teams to reduce chargebacks and declines
  • Building new tools for our business teams
  • Building new systems to securely store sensitive data

Who are we?

We enable business experts to build and distribute powerful applications. Our software is intuitive and simple enough for non-IT experts to understand within minutes, yet powerful enough and enterprise-ready for industries with complex reasoning and demanding use cases. We especially cater to experts in law, finance, tax and compliance by helping them automate and standardise decision making.

What does working at BRYTER look like?

We are a remote-first Software-as-a-Service company, with people across Europe. At BRYTER, we believe in the power of self-organising teams and that everyone can be a leader. That’s why we strive for a way of working that reduces unnecessary burden and instead focuses on delivering value.

📅 Meetings

There are only two regular, mandatory meetings:

  • A short 30min company-wide update meeting that happens weekly. This provides a forum for each business area of BRYTER to update the company on their progress towards their quarterly objectives.
  • Our weekly Product Sync/Planning, where we revisit what we’re currently working on and what we plan to do in the upcoming week(s).
  • Other than that, we do a company-wide virtual-coffee session every morning.

Do you get pissed (in a professional way) when someone else leaves their dishes in the sink? Please apply!

TrainerRoad is looking to expand our engineering group. We're looking for smart software engineers who "get things done." We’re interested in remote candidates in the USA or candidates interested in working in our Reno office.

Areas of work include React, TypeScript, Electron and React Native.

App Development We're moving our apps from cross-platform Xamarin to Electron/React Native. You'd be involved in this process and would work with experienced engineers to rebuild a section of the app.

Our goal is to increase the speed of app development. We do this through hot module reloading, fast computers, a great build chain, automated testing, clear and well-defined issues and a dedicated QA team that tests every PR.

We track what our users do, learn from that and improve the product. We want this loop to be a quick as possible.

Our website is built in Angular 2+ and there's the opportunity to work on the web in Angular.

This job is primarily for Electron (using React) and React Native app development, but there's room for someone to move to the web in the future or split their time between web/app.

Engineering Principles we believe in

  • Write good code, but not necessarily great code.
  • Good code ships, great code gets "tinkered" with and debated about ad nauseam.
  • Good code is understandable.
  • We admit it, we've made things too complex in the past. We've had complex class hierarchies and really shown off our CS skills.
  • Sure, there's fewer lines of code, but it takes someone a few days to figure out what's going on and it's easy to write bugs.

We believe in a few more lines of code for the sake of clarity and debugging ease.

  • Good code is testable, and we're pragmatic about testing.
  • You don't get the same testing ROI for every line of code. We believe to test the areas that are most likely to break, are tricky or are likely to be changed. We still run thousands of unit tests per build, but we're not testing 1+1 = 2.
  • Quick builds will set you free!
  • To be a successful engineer, you need to get into "flow" (more on that below) as often as you can. That's why we love hot module reloading.
  • We want just enough process to be awesome, and nothing more.
  • We have engineers review issues before a sprint for clarity and completeness. When they submit a PR there's always code review, UI/Unit tests run, then QA manually tests.
  • For the web, we automatically push every PR that's merged into Master.

For the app, we do weekly releases where there's a final regression test with all merged PRs from the previous week.

Our process prevents bugs/regressions and ultimately saves a lot of time.

  • Long-running branches are the devil
  • Often times projects will take weeks/months before they are launched.
  • Instead of experiencing a merge/testing hell at the end of the project we encourage small PRs into master with a "feature flag" on the new project that allows employees to use the feature in production but not our users.

Cool Things we Do

  • Every PR has a set of unit tests and automated UI tests run against it.
  • Every PR is code reviewed.
  • We have a dedicated QA team to manually check your PR (it requires four testers to sign off).
  • Every web PR that is approved is automatically deployed (CI).
  • We've got a beta system that has a flow of production data that helps you develop and test your code without worry of breaking things.
  • Everything is hosted on Azure. There's plenty of dev/beta/test servers and databases to use.
  • The web and app team have their own Product Managers.
  • We run two-week sprints. The web/app team reviews, estimates, and discusses all sprint issues before they are free to be worked.
  • We often pair program.
  • The majority of our engineers are remote.
  • We have a skilled design team that handles the HTML/LESS for app and website.

Who We're Looking For

We want smart engineers who get shit done! Not only do you have to be smart, but you also have to be pragmatic.

Let's say you need to paint a room white.

Smart and Pragmatic Engineer: A pragmatic engineer fills up a sprayer (rather than use a paintbrush), gets to work, and makes sure they don't paint themselves into a corner.

Smart Engineer (but not pragmatic): A smart engineer who's not pragmatic might design a system to change the color of the room in just 30 seconds. Sure, it would take 2 months to build the system but we could change colors so quickly! It's totally optimized for repainting!

If the second example sounds like you, please do not apply. We know it's fun to go hog wild in projects but we need to "get shit done". There's a whole line of other engineers and designers waiting for that room to get painted so they can do their own work on it.

We're a Team, not a Family It sounds harsh to say, but we're not a Family. I know lots of businesses call themselves a family, but I think it's BS. If you get drunk at work and yell at someone, we're going to let you go (although we would give Grandma a pass at Thanksgiving).

It's better to think of TrainerRoad like a sports team. Everyone has their role and their jobs. It's our jobs as managers to bring new hires up to speed, train them in our system, and coach them to be successful.

If someone is not performing, we need to talk to them, coach them, find out what's going wrong and where we can improve. If someone just can't perform to the standard level of the team and we can't coach them to get better, we have to let that person go.

Another clear sign that you have a high-performance team is that if everyone would "enthusiastically rehire" each other for their current roles. It really makes work wonderful when you respect, trust and value your co-workers.

Required Technology Experience

  • React
  • Redux/Mobx
  • Typescript
  • Git
  • Web Application Experience (interactive web pages)

Optional Technology Experience

  • React Native
  • Electron
  • Native iOS/Android
  • Angular
  • C# (We use this on our web backend)

Work Remote or in Reno, Nevada We're looking for the best candidate we can find in the US. Three-quarters of our development team work remotely. It works very well with the help of Slack and Github.

We expect remote employees to overlap at least 6 hours with the Reno, Nevada office (we're there 8am-5pm Pacific time).

Salary We're looking to hire an engineer for $110k/year. If you ask for more, we'll reject your application. If you're interested in the company please subscribe to our RSS feed at jobs.trainerroad.com for when a higher level job posting is open.

Perks Unlimited Vacation 401k with 4% company matching 99% of employee's individual health care paid (I know 99% is weird...it's an ACA thing, and it ends up being just a few dollars per paycheck) You can see a preview of what you'd pay here: https://www.zenefits.com/benefits-preview/?token=3733c1ac-fc72-420a-b224-d9a25bcc1e27 Flexible schedule Access to the latest fitness devices (power meters, trainers, sensors, etc.) Your Resume should have: Links to any open source projects you've contributed to (not required) Github/StackOverflow username if you'd like Examples of experience in the "Optional Technology Experience" area Your Cover Letter should have: Let us know why you want to work for TrainerRoad We also Require The best engineers only want to work with other great engineers. We've found that the best way to find great engineers is to have them code, not just answer trivia questions during an interview.

That's why we require applications to do a refactoring exercise as part of their job submission. The right candidate won't find this a pain in the ass; it should be enjoyable.

This also weeds out the vast majority of candidates who just fire off resumes everywhere.

You can find the refactoring exercise here: https://github.com/trainerroad/RefactoringChallenge

It has a README.md with instructions.

Excited about our Company? In your application let us know why you want to work with us and why you think you'd be a good fit for our company.

FAQs

Do I have to be a cyclist to apply? Nope! Not everyone in the company is a cyclist. It helps if you're an active racer but it's not required. If you are a racer or TrainerRoad user, let us know!

What's unlimited vacation mean? The CEO of TrainerRoad used to be an engineer at a Fortune 500 company where life was a grind. We believe employees put out their best work when they are happy and not burnt out.

If your brain just isn't working at 3 pm, we encourage employees to go home and rest up. It does no one any good to sit and stare at the computer screen for another two hours. We don't track that time.

Employees generally shoot for around four weeks of REAL vacation time (no slack checking) but some take more, and some take less. The thing we care about is how productive you can be and how much value you can add to the company. Bottom line, we want people who are passionate and get things done. If you meet those requirements, everything else works itself out.

That being said, if you end up taking massive amounts of vacation, come in late, leave early and aren't producing outstanding work we're going to have a problem.

How do you work? We're big believers in Deep Work and Flow. If you're not turning off Slack (snooze), going DND on your phone and shutting off the world for multiple hours a day you're probably not being as productive as you could be. The idea is a developer should be able to work on a chunk of work that they understand distraction-free for multiple hours totally. This is the only way the company moves forward.

We try to work as pragmatically as we can. We have excellent designers on staff who go from mockups to responsive HTML with light javascript work.

Development uses Github with a strict pull request process. We test, comment, refactor and improve each other's pull requests.

We have a QA team (we call them the Test Team) that checks every PR and does full regression checks for each App release, and we're continually getting more automated.

We have an Automation Team that only focuses on writing UI tests to speed up testing and find bugs faster.

We can one-click deploy our app on Alpha, Beta, and Production channels.

We can one-click deploy our website to Azure (includes smoke tests and warm up).

We have nightly builds that deploy to Test Flight and Google Play.

We often pair program via Slack.

We work off bi-weekly sprint issue lists on Github.

Developers get the super fast machines and awesome equipment. If it's going to let you be more productive, we want to spend the money on it.

You didn't ask about education, what's required? Please put your education on your resume, but we're not going to reject someone because they don't have a degree in Computer Science. We understand that some of the best and most passionate engineers are self-taught.

How long until I hear a response from you guys? What's the process? If you don't follow directions in this job posting, you'll be immediately rejected.

If you did follow directions, our goal is to review your refactoring within a week of submitting your application. All refactoring reviews are done "blind"; meaning the reviewer doesn't know your name, resume or where you're from. Code is code, and it should be reviewed that way without bias.

If we like your refactoring, we'll have you do a coding logic quiz. Nothing super in-depth CS wise. We've found that the candidates who do the best on these exercises are very successful at TrainerRoad.

We'll take the top combined refactoring and coding quiz results and set you up for a team interview.

If the team likes you; we'll then set up a pair programming session with you and an engineer. We'll give you a tour of our codebase and work on a real issue. This gives you a chance to run away from our codebase screaming and also demonstrate that you can communicate with us.

If all of the above is good, you're hired!

I know this sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through, but it works so so well! Once you're onboard, you'll love that everyone else went through the same process and is up to "your level" in terms of "get-shit-doneness".

What's with the dishes analogy? Doing your own dishes is a GREAT analogy for our culture. Don't leave shit around for someone else to clean up. Do your own dishes. Do you see someone making a mess? Let's discuss it (in a productive manner) so that we can nip that behavior in the bud.

We know we're really doing well when someone points out a manager not "doing their dishes" or causing an extra headache for a process that doesn't add value (it happens). Seriously, we need employees to call managers out on this. I'm the CEO writing this; please oh please tell me if I'm messing up or not walking the talk.

Want more detail about the benefits? You can see a preview of TrainerRoad's health benefits here:https://secure.zenefits.com/benefitsPreview?token=3733c1ac-fc72-420a-b224-d9a25bcc1e27

This is the longest job posting ever, when does it end?

Right now! Congrats if you made it this far! We look forward to looking at your resume and refactoring exercise.

We've been providing advertising, design and PR for almost 40 years and for the past 20 of those, content managed websites and bespoke web applications exclusively in Python and the Django framework.

We're looking for somebody friendly, quick witted and experienced to join our small team of Python developers in building and launching websites and applications for the likes of the NHS, Home Office, Taylor Wimpey, Hasbean Coffee and countless charities, universities, and police forces.

We're based in Leicester, UK in a lovely, shiny office where we normally enjoy working, collaborating and socialising together. Given we're in the midst of a global pandemic we're all working from home, and this particular position is open to anybody and everybody - fully remote, fully onsite, or somewhere in between.

OUR TECH STACK

We deploy websites and applications using Python and Django, and the Wagtail CMS for content managed websites. Other technologies and frameworks you'd experience include Docker, Bootstrap, PostgreSQL, MariaDB/MySQL, Elasticsearch, SCSS, HTML5, and JavaScript. We host a large number of websites and applications with Rackspace and Amazon Web Services.

THE ROLE

Your key responsibilities will be the ongoing development and refinement of numerous websites for our eclectic list of clients. You'll be helping to improve existing projects and working on brand new projects too.

Day to day you'll be working alongside a small team of developers (junior and senior), designers, and a user researcher who will all be there to support you and discuss and develop your ideas. You'll also have access to 60+ other talented writers, designers and creatives across the company.

Requirements

We need somebody that truly knows their way around Python and Django, and the Wagtail CMS too. Two or more years experience minimum feels right - if it's slightly less but you're mindblowingly good then we're all ears!

Programming skills are definitely only half the story, you'll also need to be able to:

Think independently and be able to solve unique challenges efficiently and autonomously (although we're realistic and don't expect you to have memorised the Python docs - you'll get more kudos from searching Stack Overflow) Also be able to work cooperatively as part of a team Possess good writing and communication skills Be comfortable talking about and explaining technical concepts in plain English Keep up to date with new techniques in your field and share knowledge and new ideas with the team It's not critical, but it would be beneficial if you also had experience in:

There is a real buzz, excitement and family feel about the place. All 60+ of us are passionate about what we do. We're all remote at the moment, but when we're in the office people work in their slippers, share pictures of their pets and kids, and frequently organise good old fashioned drinks in the nearby pub. Above all - remote or not - after a fulfilling day’s work, people head home with a smile on their face. Looking after each other is the thing we're really proud of :)

But, this is a job ad, and we get how it needs to work. Other benefits include:

Competitive salary based on your experience Complete flexibility to work remotely 20 days annual leave and 8 days national bank holidays plus extra time around Christmas Early finishes on Fridays throughout the summer A big good old messy Christmas party and a mid-year summer party for you and your family or a friend (all expenses paid) Whatever computer, software, books and other materials you might need A healthy budget for whatever training, conferences, and other qualifications you might be interested in taking Free-as-in-free beer, wine, and other goodies as we near the weekend Regular paid for social activities (in person normally, but remote at the moment): cookalongs, yoga lessons, go-karting, curries, poker, and more Free flowing, high quality, award-winning Hasbean coffee on tap A gorgeous workspace with plenty of space to relax, think, read, cook, eat, and work

If this all sounds good to you, please get in touch!

We are recruiting for a switched on front end JS developer with a fine eye for detail/QA. The ideal candidate will have UI skills and is comfortable working with rich web application development using Vue.js, seeking to grow into a full stack developer role over the next 18 months.

Required Skills

We are building complex software solutions for the auction industry using Node.js and Vue.js within Laravel and you will need to have experience in the following areas if you are going to succeed in this role. We have a great team that will help and mentor you through learning our architecture, and you will be involved in both the upgrade of our legacy auction platforms and the creation of our new marketplace products.

JavaScript advanced knowledge. You will have a deep knowledge of JavaScript in terms of frameworks and libraries for designing and implementing front-end architecture and analysing dependencies among user interactions. You should know how to use various JavaScript frameworks and libraries in a single project while avoiding compatibility conflicts.

Programming paradigms. You will know other programming paradigms such as MVC, OOP, and functional programming, which support programming concepts that help create reusable and readable front-end code.

Single-page applications (SPAs). You will have experience of Vue.js to enable user actions to trigger re-rendering (redrawing) processes on other UI elements without reloading the whole page.

You will also be comfortable working with hybrid environments and know which approach is appropriate for the specific project and how to implement it.

Networking protocols. You will understand the REST architectural style and standard networking protocols designed for web application environments.

Our projects require high interaction between the back-end and front-end to deliver a real time auction bidding experience via Node.js and dynamic media streams—you will need to be comfortable working with more advanced protocols such as web sockets.

Security. You should be familiar with web security concepts and how to integrate user authentication and authorisation into our application’s front-end, specifically as we have to adhere to anti-money laundering protocols,

You should be familiar with the HTTPS protocol, know how to avoid cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, and have experience implementing user session management and token-based authentication and authorization.

Package managers. Our web applications contain a lot of JavaScript dependencies, you will be experienced working with package managers to manage our JavaScript library dependencies and avoid version collisions.

JavaScript bundlers and task runners. You willknow how to use these tools to develop SPAs effectively. You will be able to configure the automation of repetitive tasks in front-end development without additional tools. You will know how to deliver test-driven development and behaviour-driven development to ensure our applications are front-end testable.

Advanced optimization. Complex front-end architectures can contain a lot of source code with redundant dependencies, a situation which requires additional optimisation, you will be comfortable working to drive optimum code efficiency with proper documentation for the wider development teams.

You will also know how to implement the lazy-loading technique, where content is downloaded invisibly as a user browses or scrolls web pages.

Back-end development. You will work closely with our back-end developers in order to design API calls which define communication between an application’s front-end and back-end.

You may be called upon to start building front-end architecture without any support or data from an application’s back-end. In this case, you will need to know how to design and develop your own API calls to mock (fake) the data that will later be provided from the back-end.

Person profile

You will be an approachable problem solver, a team player who enjoys the challenge of figuring out commercially led solutions for our client operations. You understand the importance of communication when there are roadblocks, and you have a very keen eye for detail, driving code efficiency and documenting your work to help the entire team up their skillsets.

You will be happy working in an agile scrum based environment, remotely using a number of tools to support workflow.

In return, you'll get to work on one of the most exciting projects in the auction space, with a fast growing and ambitious company that is beginning to expand internationally. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to grow with us as we move into our next round of product launches.
