Angaza creates software for selling life-changing products in underserved markets. When a family in Tanzania (or Kenya, or Nigeria, or India…) pays a weekly installment on their new home solar installation, their payment is processed by Angaza backend software. When they have a question about their account, a call center finds the answer using an Angaza web application. Their lives were changed when they could turn on electricity for the first time, and the business that made it possible used Angaza software to do so: to register their purchase, to set up their installation, and to stay in touch while they start to benefit from it. Plenty of other “B2B SaaS” companies build software designed for mature industries and well-served markets. Angaza instead designs technology that works better for people and places that are often the edge cases for other software companies. They are, however, our core users, and we believe they’ll use our software to dramatically improve the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people over the next decade.

This Position

As a member of the Business Foundations team, you will provide tools and services that enrich the lives of countless people around the world. Your team’s charter is to manage the data access, security, and revenue flow of Angaza’s customers, and you will deploy improvements as often as daily. You’ll learn from us how we maintain a high level of service with a high-quality code base, and we’ll learn from you how we can make them even better. You’ll write a lot of Python, much of it invoking the SQLAlchemy and Flask frameworks. You’ll be encouraged to span the gamut of software responsibilities, from managing operations in our AWS-based stack to thinking hard about high-level architecture. You’ll earn considerable freedom of approach, ownership of results, and bi-weekly celebrations of what you’ve accomplished. You’ll receive weekly investment in your career growth from senior engineers and in turn be invited to mentor colleagues where you have knowledge. Every engineering role includes opportunities to lead and obligations to serve. At Angaza we support diversity of thought, experience, and background, and seek to welcome new perspectives and skills to the team. Candidates from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are warmly encouraged to apply.

Should You Reach Out?

  • You should have 4+ years of professional experience writing software. Beyond that, experience in any of the following areas (listed in rough order of how regularly you’ll draw on them) will be directly relevant to your work here:
  • Python (we use SQLAlchemy and Flask heavily)
  • Postgres (SQL and management)
  • REST API design and implementation
  • Implementation of testable complex business logic
  • Performance and scaling of three-tier applications

Next Step This position is full-time and on-site in our San Francisco office. Send us your contact details and résumé. Feel free to attach any extra information you think we should know. We look at every single person. We’ll get back to you shortly.

Other Details Angaza is a for-profit company with offices in San Francisco and Nairobi. Our global technical team is more than two dozen people. We’ve worked at places like Kiva, Canonical, Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Mozilla. We strive to be thoughtful, pragmatic, and collaborative. Our hiring process typically involves a phone conversation, a small and well-defined home project, and an on-site interview. We don’t believe in gotcha logic puzzles or adversarial whiteboard exercises, and we give you specific constructive feedback wherever possible.

Employees receive salary, an equity stake in Angaza, and benefits that include:

  • Medical, life, and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Your transit or bike commute expenses paid by Angaza
  • Parental leave at 100% salary
  • Flexible time off
  • Free snacks and drinks

New Vector is the open source software development startup which employs the core team behind Matrix.org – the leading project for secure open decentralised communication. Matrix’s mission is to create a universal open network and protocol for real-time communication. New Vector builds flagship apps for Matrix such as Riot.im as well as contributing to the core Matrix open source clients, SDKs, servers, bridges and the protocol itself.

We believe that the future of the internet should be decentralised and open, that previously siloed communications platforms should be interoperable and that individuals should control their own data and choose who they share it with.

Ultimately, our aim is to make it as simple to message or video call anyone in the world as it is to send them an email.

Our products are for everyone and we know we cannot succeed without a diverse team. Our hiring process is designed to be humane and give candidates the best possible chance to show us what you can do. If we ever fall down on this, please let us know.

The Role

You'll spend most of your time working on Synapse the reference implementation of the Matrix spec. You can take a look at the code on here. Give it a spin!

Synapse is used by millions of people globally, from large governmental organisations like the French Civil Service through to community groups and open source projects like KDE and Wikimedia.

This role is about improving the performance and reliability of Synapse, implementing new features to further evolve the spec and generally making it as easy as possible for anyone to access secure, decentralised communication software.

Example recent projects:-

Improve Synapse Performance - With thousands of deployments in production today, Synapse is the dominant homeserver implementation in the Matrix ecosystem and the technology that backs the matrix.org homeserver. Written in Python/Twisted, there is massive scope for performance improvements as the schema and algorithms were originally written to prove the Matrix APIs rather than for efficiency. Today usage of the Synapse deployment on matrix.org is growing exponentially and it is vital that we keep pace with the growth of the network. Rearchitecting the data model to improve user data privacy. You can also check out our public roadmap.

Since (almost) everything we do is open source you can get a great feel for exactly what it would be like to work on Riot, why not join our developer channel at #synapse-dev:matrix.org to provide a window into the core team and the community. Come and say hi!

Requirements

About you

The most important thing is that you believe passionately in the mission of decentralisation of the internet. More specifically that you believe that communications should not be centralised in the hands of a small number of very large organisations and instead individuals should control their own data and choose who they share it with.

Additionally we are looking for someone who is:

  • Smart, curious and enthusiastic
  • Likes to ship early and often
  • Likes to write tests :)
  • A tireless advocate of code quality (understanding the need for trade-offs in the short term whilst keeping us honest in the long term)
  • Is articulate and empathetic.
  • Is comfortable with the pace, trade offs and ambiguity of an early stage startup (specifically: how to take care of yourself and get your work done without working crazy hours).

Your experience

We don’t have hard requirements for the role, we just want to build the best possible team, but as a bonus it would be great if some of the following are true.

  • Experience with Python and Twisted
  • Experience of designing, building and maintaining distributed systems at scale
  • Experience maintaining and/or contributing to open source projects

  • Review analytics data to find opportunities to further optimize the funnel

  • Write new APIs and rewrite old ones using GraphQL and Apollo

  • Deep understanding of data design and modeling

  • Built and worked on complex web applications

  • A deep understanding of design patterns — and an even better knowledge of when to apply them

  • Very comfortable behind a linux terminal.

    Applying

Think you’re a good fit for the role? We’d love to hear from you — even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements.

Our goal is to create a hiring experience that provides opportunities for and values everyone equally. We value whatever it is that makes you unique—your educational background, experience, ethnicity, age, citizenship, gender identity — and we would love to explore the value you can add to our team.

Staff Software Engineer

At Webflow, we have two missions: one for us, and one for the world. We want to enable everyone to create for the web and empower our team to lead fulfilling and impactful lives while we do it. Ambitious? Heck yes. Crazy? Probably. Possible? With your help, abso-heckin-lutely.

So — where do you come in?

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer (hopefully you!) to join our Designer Experience team. In this role, you’ll focus on increasing the power our users have by using Webflow while also optimizing the ease-of-use of our product as a whole. Users should feel like they have endless opportunities — that they can create and build whatever they want as easily as possible. And as a result, Webflow will become the de facto visual development tool that all future products/competitors will look to mimic.

What you’ll achieve:

  • Empower your fellow engineers to lead the NoCode revolution and to lead meaningful and impactful lives.

  • Improve our developer experience and workflow by collecting and analyzing data, optimizing local dev environment, and enabling new tooling to support engineering needs

  • Explore emerging technologies and propose means to apply them to the existing codebase

  • Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, designers and QA analysts in an autonomous, supportive team environment

  • Solve problems in a highly technical platform that empowers hundreds of thousands of people, and serves millions of page views an hour

  • Improve our planning, development, and deployment processes to help you and your fellow team members

    How you’ll achieve it:

  • You’ll bring experience (4+ years or the equivalent in depth) in front-end engineering with experience in coding, testing, debugging, and analyzing complex JavaScript applications (we use React and Flux)

  • You’ll dream big with us and apply your unique problem-solving and communication skills to help us make a visual tool that enable awesome humans to create software without code

  • You’re comfortable in an agile, safe-to-fail-but-always-learn environment and hunger for growth opportunities

  • Your interest in mentoring less experienced engineers in best practices and will pay dividends in helping level up the team and the org.

  • You’ll work in multiple domains and be the bridge between teams when necessary for effective cross-team collaboration.

  • You see the value in JavaScript type systems, understand their limitations and strengths, and are familiar with one or more of them (we use Flow here)

  • You’ll leverage your expert understanding of modern JavaScript tooling (Webpack, CSS-in-JS, Babel, ESlint, etc.), compilers, and AST transforms

  • You’ll lead with empathy — and attempt to understand developer experiences that may differ from your own

  • You’ll work with a remote-first team (and visit the office whenever you need some human face-time)

  • You’ll treat your teammates with respect and value team success over personal success

  • You’ll use synchronous and asynchronous tools (Slack and GitHub) to enable and contribute to cross-team collaboration

  • You’ll learn to (if you haven’t already) tolerate dad jokes and puns … at Webflow, they’re everywhere!

How we’ll help you succeed — and live a fulfilling life in the process

  • We’ll pay you! This is a full-time, salaried position that includes equity

  • We’ll invest in your physical and mental well-being with health, dental, and vision benefits and a monthly stipend for health and wellness expenses

  • We’ll pay you to take a vacation … seriously. We’ll give you a $1,000 bonus for taking your first vacation with us that is more than 5 days

  • We offer flexible parental leave for moms and dads. And for the moms and dads of furry friends, we have #dogs and #cats Slack channels where you can show off your pet!

  • We will offer you the support you need to help you grow as an impactful engineer and a healthy human being

Think you’re a good fit for the role?

We’d love to hear from you — even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements.

Our customers come from all walks of life — and we want to build a team that reflects the world we want to build for. The truth? We’re not there yet. But we’re committed to building a company that values everyone for, not in spite of, their unique identities, experiences, and backgrounds. We care about and champion diversity because it’s the right thing to do — and we believe that doing the right thing makes our company stronger.

If you share our values and our enthusiasm for empowering the world, we would love to hear from you and explore the value you can add to our team.
